When it*s time to plan that next family vacation, consider the possibilities that Alabama has to offer for great entertainment and fun-filled activities. Montgomery Zoo 每 located in Montgomery, Alabama 每 is a ※must§ for the family itinerary. Over 700 animals inhabit this beautiful 40-acre facility, in settings reminiscent of their natural environments. Included among the many exotic creatures are the giant anteater, giraffes, bison, tropical birds, venomous snakes, lions, zebras and a multitude of their animal cousins. The zoo offers a miniature train ride on the McMonty Zoo Express, which allows guests to see the facility*s highlights 每 this is particularly nice for the elderly members of the family and very small children who can*t tolerate long periods of walking. A number of programs and workshops are available, as well 每 mostly targeting children 每 and special events take place quite frequently. Your tour will continue with The Hoofprints through Alabama 每 a bit of the state*s cattle industry from the 1500s through current times. From there, you*ll visit Slim*s Buckaroo Cattle Club 每 three galleries of exhibits which characterize a cattleman*s life. The Rodeo Arena offers the excitement of the rodeo, with fun exhibits that the kids will love. Kids will learn all about the care of cattle, focusing specifically on nutrition, at The Cow Pen. Slim*s Kitchen invites children to play in a colorful kid-size kitchen as they learn about the nutritional value of beef. Upon the completion of your tour, you*ll have the opportunity to visit The Gift Shop, where you*ll find mementos of your MOOseum experience and lots of souvenirs for the folks back home.
Birmingham is home to McWane Center 每 an interactive learning facility, designed for kids of all ages. Youngsters will have the opportunity to lie on a bed of nails, build a rollercoaster, play a laser harp, explore the watery depths while creating waves on the shore, play in a water table, visit a play area where everything is giant-size, take part in a space mission as a scientist or engineer and watch a movie that*s six stories tall. Some of the areas that are available include Just Mice Size, ScienceQuest, World of Water, Newsroom Studio, GENEius Lab and John W. Woods IMAX Dome Theater. Special events are always on the horizon and may include Adventures in Chemistry, River Journey Encounter, Dino Discoveries, Face Painting, Animal Adventures and Giants of the Past. There*s enough in this beautiful facility to keep kids busy for the better part of a day. One of the highlights of McWane Center is its presentation 每 props and settings are absolutely breathtaking, combined with a wonderful supply of interactive activities. Comfortable walking shoes are required here, due to the size of the attraction.
While you*re in Birmingham, make a stop at Birmingham*s Children*s Theater. The props and costuming make a delightful presentation for young and old alike, with shows that have been taken from stories all around the world. Treat the children to a tale with German, Russian, West African and American origins, to name a few. Performances may include The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Princess and the Pea, Ferdinand the Bull, The Queen of Hearts, The Three Little Kittens and The Snow Girl, in addition to many others. Holiday time offers specialty shows, such as The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Typically, performances are offered twice daily, 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Birmingham Children*s Theater is the largest theater for children in America and is host to an excess of 300,000 spectators each year, so you may want to call ahead for seating availability. This attraction is highly recommended for all vacationing families 每 especially those with younger children.
Since there*s so much to see in Birmingham, it*s worth noting Magic Adventure Theme Park and Splash Beach Waterpark. The combination of these delightful parks makes this tourist spot an excellent 每 and colossal 每 family fun spot. The theme park has a multitude of rides, including The Rampage, Tidal Wave, Wild River Gorge, The Pirate Ship, Sky Wheel, The Wild Scrambler, Sky Wheel II, Hurricane, The Space Shot and many more. DeSoto Caverns Park, located in Childersburg, offers a wide array of fun-filled activities for vacationing families. Among the many rides and attractions are Water Dodge, DeSoto*s Cave Crawl Box, DeSoto*s Lost Trail Maze, Water Balloon Battle, Bow & Arrow Shoot, Squirt Gun Maze, Lickitysplit, Fossil Find and so much more. There*s even one children*s ride 每 Happy*s Potty Racers 每 that resembles a toilet with handlebars. For something a bit tamer, there*s DeSoto*s Ship Playground, which will be a real hit with the very young. Special events take place on an ongoing basis, such as the Annual Spring Indian Dance and Crafts Festival, fall and winter get-away packages and holiday Sound, Light and Water shows during both Thanksgiving and Christmas. This wonderful park, rich in history, is a great spot for kids to spend the day enjoying unique playtime. Families can also spend time touring through the caverns. Whichever area you focus on, be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, and plan to spend the entire day. There*s a lot to see at DeSoto Caverns Park.
Wildland Expeditions 每 located in Creola, Alabama 每 offers a thrilling adventure for the entire family. Take a tour of the wilderness in a Delta-Swamp Boat, called Gator Bait, to experience a bit of the ※wild§ life. Breathtaking scenery, clean air and animals in their natural habitat are on the itinerary for those who take this fascinating boat ride. Among the many swamp inhabitants that you*ll meet are ospreys, wild alligators, birds and a variety of other wetland creatures. Flowers and abundant greenery will be the backdrop for your trip and, in some areas, you*ll be able to sit in total silence and appreciate the peaceful surroundings. At other times, you can reach out and touch the plant life 每 some of which are used in the manufacture of medicines. The Gator Bait will be captained by expert tour guides who have extensive knowledge of the surroundings and its inhabitants. This is a unique experience for folks who usually stick to the more traditional tourist attractions. Youngsters will be delighted by the opportunity to slog through the swamps 每 just as they do in the movies.
If you*re planning a fall vacation, be sure to visit Huntsville Botanical Garden - host to Scarecrow Trail during September and October. The youngsters will get a thrill from walking the trail and seeing the various characters that represent autumn, such as scarecrows and other straw people, tea party guests, bats, prehistoric people and more. Some are unique, others are funny, but all are beautifully crafted and will add lots of fun to the trail. Musical entertainment is also provided by a variety of performers throughout the season. Also offered during the latter part of the year by Huntsville Botanical Garden 每 for those planning a winter holiday 每 is Galaxy of Lights. This mile-long display of animated holiday lighting is a spectacular attraction for the family at Christmas time. Kids will enjoy seeing Santa, their favorite fairytale characters and the winter village. The entire family will be delighted by the breathtaking display in Icicle Forest. During mid-November until just before Thanksgiving, walking tours of the area take place. From Thanksgiving until the end of the year, drive-through nights are allowed. Don*t forget to bring the camera to these two events 每 you*ll be sure to capture great photographic memories.
