Virginia contains 43,000 square miles of natural habitat that is frequented by 400 species of birds.  This includes every bird that is naturally found between Maine and Florida.   There are many birding trails and bird watching locations throughout Virginia¡¯s varied topography.  If you are a bird watching enthusiast and would like to take birding trips in Virginia here is a guide for the most popular birding sites.

Start your adventure in northern Virginia between the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers.  This area has large expanses of undeveloped land and wetlands that provide homes for more than 250 species of birds.  Many migrant birds also pass through the region in the spring and fall including the Yellow-Crowned Night Herons.

Northern Virginia is also home to Hickory Hollow Nature Preserve.  This 254-acre woodland is filled with trails, ravines, and swampy marshlands.  It is situated in Lancaster County, Virginia.  Visitors to Hickory Hollow enjoy extensive observation of uncommon birds in a natural woodland setting.  Another great birding site is the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, which is located near Richmond, the capital city.  A trip there would include a two-hour long stroll with many opportunities for watching birds.

James River Park Wetlands near the city of Richmond and Bryan Park are two wonderful sites for observing the spring migration of birds.  Nearby is the Royal Stone Quarry in northern Virginia¡¯s Henrico County.  It has been a certified wildlife habitat location since 1992.  The quarry has many bird boxes with a vibrant wildlife program that seeks to identify the various birds that make the quarry their home.

The eastern coast of Virginia has many localities that are ideal for bird watching trips.  Great Dismal Swamp located near the city of Suffolk is renowned for rare birds such as Swainson Warblers.   Norfolk Botanical Gardens is another excellent site for viewing various species of birds and plants.

Kiptopeake State Park located three miles from the northern terminus of the Chesapeake Bay along Virginia¡¯s eastern shore is a favorite spot for bird watchers.  Volunteers capture, examine, weigh, band, and release resident and migratory birds each year from mid-August through November. In the raptor research area, hawks, kestrels, osprey and other birds of prey are observed and banded from September through November. Kiptopeke¡¯s hawk observatory is among the top 15 nationwide. 

The Chesapeake Bay Eastern Shore Wildlife Refuge is another great place to visit.  There you will see unique birds such as scoters, loons, and grebes. If you are interested in migrating shore birds, waterfowl, local bald eagles, rails, and bitterns then plan a trip to Craney Island and Mackey Island Visitor Center.  These islands are both located off Virginia¡¯s eastern shore. 

Bird watching trips in southern and southwest Virginia include locations between the James River and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There you will find 80-90 species of birds including the Kentucky, Canada, Worm-eating, and Hooded Warbler.

The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Peaks of Otter, located in southwestern Virginia are both havens for birdwatchers.  Blandy Farm, the Virginia state arboretum, is also located in this area.  Most weekends at least one Audubon member will be at the arboretum, which is six miles east of interstate I 81.   

Before you begin your birding trips, it would be best to do some research about each area you plan to visit and bring a detailed map.  Take along basic birding equipment such as binoculars, a bird identification guidebook, and a notebook.  You might also need a hat, sunglasses, and insect repellent. Dress in dark colors and wear comfortable walking shoes.  With a little preparation you will enjoy your bird watching trips across Virginia¡¯s countryside.
