While in Honolulu, be sure to make a stop at The Honolulu Zoo 每 a huge facility, with beautiful exhibits and a multitude of specialty areas, activities and events for the entire family.  Among the many inhabitants, you＊ll have the opportunity to meet a Caracal, Dik-Dik, Hawaiian Hoary Bat, Indian Elephant, Lemur, Meerkat, Sun Bear, White-Handed Gibbon, Black Swan, Blue Goose, Fairy Bluebird, Flamingo, Green Singing Finch, Bloodsucker Lizard, African Pancake Tortoise, Komodo Dragon and Day Gecko, as well as a myriad of others.  Special habitats include African Savanna, Tropical Forest, Pacific Islands and the Children＊s Zoo 每 a farmyard scenario which allows the youngsters to get ※up close and personal§ with the animals.  In addition, a number of family and child-related activities are on hand, such as Vacation Adventures 每 kids have the opportunity to attend a zoo day camp for up to a week (1/2 day and full day sessions are available); Snooze in the Zoo 每 an overnight zoo experience, featuring tours, campfire songs & storytelling and lots of fun; Twilight Tours 每 between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., during the weekend that falls closest to the full moon, these special tours are offered, highlighting the behaviors of the various animals; Keiki Zoo Keeper 每 designed for children from ages 6 through 10, this program gives them the opportunity to discover the world of the zoo keeper, help with the feedings and assist in making special treats for the animals.  Rest areas are scattered throughout the zoo, for those who need a bit of a break, and picnic areas are also available.  Don＊t forget to visit the Zootique Gift Shop for your souvenir and gift shopping.  It should be noted that, while the zoo provides ample parking, a charge of 25 cents per hour is incurred for those who choose to visit.  Due to the size of the facility, comfortable walking shoes are definitely in order 每 and sunscreen for hot, bright days.

Also located on the Island of Hawaii is Hawaii Shark Encounters 每 a thrilling underwater experience with sharks in their natural habitat.  While the folks at Hawaii Shark Encounters set no age limit for this attraction 每 nor do they require prior diving experience - it is definitely a challenge that＊s designed for the more daring souls.  Your journey will begin with a ride on the Shark Vessel, Kainani 每 a short 15-minute jaunt to the shark grounds.  Upon your arrival, you＊ll enter the cage and be lowered into the 400-feet deep shark-infested waters.  After the Plexiglas cage is submerged, you and your family members will become part of the natural environment where the Galapagos and Sandbar Sharks reside.  Since these creatures are naturally very curious and quite used to underwater visitors, they make a habit of coming right up to the cage for a close-up encounter.  In fact, sharks are so plentiful in this region that guests are guaranteed to receive a full refund if none are in the area at the time of their visit.  You may also get to meet Hammerhead, Gray Reef and Tiger Sharks during your adventure.  For those who are visiting during whale season 每 from November to March 每 you＊ll most likely come into contact with a humpback or two 每 and even hear their underwater songs.  In addition, dolphins often accompany the boat to and from the shark grounds, and may even stick around for a quick underwater visit.  There are two departure times each day 每 7:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. 每 and the tours are usually limited to around 10 people at a time, but will include up to 18 people, if requested.  This is definitely a grand, albeit costly, adventure for those who are willing to brave the depths, and will provide thrilling memories of your Hawaiian vacation for years to come.  If you don＊t find the cost to be prohibitive - $100 per person, as of Autumn, 2004 每 then this is an attraction that you simply must experience.

The Dole Plantation 每 located in Wahiawa 每 offers a variety of family activities, as well as a tour of their grounds.  Among the many attractions that you＊ll find are The Pineapple Express 每 a two-mile ride around the plantation grounds, offering 20 minutes＊ worth of history relating to the pineapple and other agriculture intrinsic to Hawaii; and The Plantation Garden Tour 每 stroll through the various gardens while learning about crops, villages and laborers who work on sugar cane and pineapple plantations.  Gardens include Hibiscus, Lei, North Shore, Native Species, Irrigation, Ti Leaf, Bromeliads and Life on the Plantation.  The youngsters will delight in their romp through The Pineapple Garden Maze 每 named World＊s Largest Maze in the 2001 Guinness Book of World Records.  Nearly two miles of pathways wind through this 2+ acre maze, constructed of nearly 11 ? thousand colorful native plants.  This challenging 每 and exciting 每 labyrinth will bring squeals of laughter from adults and kids alike, as they wind their way through the many twists and turns of the colossal pineapple.  A camera is recommended for this site, as well as comfortable walking shoes 每 especially for those who choose to accept the challenge of the pineapple maze.
