As vacation destinations go, New Jersey is probably the Rodney Dangerfield all choices. It ¡°doesn¡¯t get no respect¡±. However, one should not discount Jersey City as an interesting place to visit. In fact you may find that Jersey City will offer you more than a visit to Manhattan if you are traveling with kids. Jersey City has a wonderful Children¡¯s Science Museum, a 1000-plus acre State Park, easy access to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and a fun ride on a water taxi to the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum. All this without the crowds, expense and sheer navigational difficulties of New York City.
The Liberty Science Center located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City is a three-story science museum that is sure to interest youngsters of all ages. Each floor is devoted to a different aspect of science: Invention, Health and the Environment.
On the Invention floor children will have a hands-on experience building and creating their own projects. They can also learn about the invention of the phonograph and the motion picture camera as they move through the child-friendly exhibits.
On the Health floor they will be able to explore their senses in ¡°perception alley¡± and the ¡°Touch Tunnel¡±. They¡¯ll learn about the human body and how it works and even explore the inside of an ambulance.
On the environment floor they will learn the different ways energy is produced and then can scale a climbing wall so they can burn off some of their own excess energy. There is a great Bug Zoo with opportunities for petting if you are feeling up to it.
Top off your trip there by visiting either the IMAX theater or the Hi-Def Theater where one can experience a film with five times the detail and color of a regular movie.
The museum is open daily except for Christmas and Thanksgiving Days from 9:30-5:30. General admission to the museum is $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for kids and seniors and kids under the age of 2 are free. Movies and parking are additional.
Liberty State Park was formally opened on Flag Day in 1976. This 1,122 acre park has 300 acres developed for public recreation. Visit the playground, have a picnic or take a stroll down the walkway and experience the breathtaking views New York Harbor. The area that is now Liberty State Park played a major role in United States history as this is where many Europeans boarded trains after they passed through the gates of Ellis Island.
While the Statue of Liberty is a quintessential New York City icon, one can easily access it from the marina at Liberty State Park in Jersey City and avoid the long lines and parking issues that one finds in Manhattan.
A short ferry ride will take you to the Statue of Liberty and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum located in New York Harbor. The price of the ferry ride includes admission to the statue and museum at Ellis Island. It is $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for seniors, $4.00 for kids aged 4-12 and kids aged 3 and under are free. A limited number of timed passes for entrance into the Statue is available at the ferry ticket office or at www.statuereservations.com. Just be forewarned that the line to enter the statue can be long so it is advisable to try to get the timed tickets. The wait will be well worth it though as you can view the inside of the statue through a glass ceiling, have a guided tour by a park ranger and go out on the observation deck and get spectacular panoramic views of New York City.
12 million immigrants passed by the Statue of Liberty and were processed through the gates of Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. It was opened to the public in 1990 as a museum run by the National Park Service. Ellis Island is a great place for kids to experience some of their own personal history. There are thousands of square feet of exhibition and theater space here.
You can also catch a Water Taxi at the Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City and visit the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum ion the harbor in mid-town Manhattan. This museum is wildly popular with kids. A former Aircraft carrier during WWII it is now a National Historical Landmark and a full-fledged museum with interactive exhibits. Tickets are $16.50 for Adults, 11.50 for kids aged 6-17, $4.50 for kids aged 2-5 and free for kids under 2. The museum is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas from 10-6.
Whatever path you choose, Jersey City is certainly filled with fun and educational opportunities for you and your family.
