San Jose, California offers a pleasant variety of amusements for children of all ages. Whether you are looking for something very special for toddlers, grade-schoolers, teens, or the entire range of ages, San Jose has enough to fill up days and weeks.
Top on my list, as a great family day is ¡°Raging Waters¡±, located inside the Cunningham Regional Park. This theme park will give the entire family smiles, giggles, and shouts of joy that will remain long after you¡¯ve packed up and gone home. The Pirates Cove is a great adventure for everyone, and the wave pool is like a visit to the ocean, only the water is warmer. There is a great variety of water slides to thrill all ages or you can choose to float along a river in a tube. Tickets for entry cover all rides, all day. Admission is a bit costly and you cannot bring in food or sodas from outside the theme park. A family of four could expect to spend, at least $200.00, but it truly is worth the price. ¡°Raging Waters¡± is very safety conscious and has strict dress and conduct requirements. Toddler¡¯s are required to wear approved swimwear rather than just diapers, and thong swimwear is not allowed, you must exit the park to smoke, and you are expected to use clean language. However, if you can put up with these rules, you and your family will have the time of your lives.
Next on my list, and easier on the credit card, is the ¡°Children¡¯s Discovery Museum¡± in downtown San Jose. Tickets are $7.00 each, seniors get a discount, and your family can picnic at a variety of nearby parks or choose from restaurants that fit all wallets. The Children¡¯s Discovery Museum is one big indoor playground for the curious. Toddlers will delight in The Wonder Cabinet or exploring the world of bubbles. The Zoom zone will keep older children occupied for hours and you can sit back, relax and watch the bee colony at work, or go play with the bubbles. For the little retailer of your family, there is a ¡°work your own shop¡± experience and ¡°banking¡± experience. The whole family can play with their own business and watching children run their own pizza shop is a riot! Along with permanent exhibits, the museum has a variety of changing projects and programs all generally involving the themes of science, technology, math and life skills.
Happy Hollow Park and Zoo is a wonderful adventure for children. Admission is $5.50 per person plus a $.6.00 parking fee but price includes zoo, puppet show and park rides. The 2nd Tuesday of each month, admission is only $1.00, so if you have the flexibility to plan, you can save your money for lunch. The petting zoo has an excellent reputation for safety and cleanliness, but you may want to bring along some anti-bacterial towels for your own peace of mind. For something very special where money is no object, Happy Hollow offers sleepovers. Generally these are set up for groups of 15 or more but, for a price your family can arrange to camp in the zoo. This is a fabulous experience and one your family will not forget. While you stargaze, you can enjoy the amazing world of bats navigating the skies, or listen to the hoot owls. Watch the jaguars prowl or a family of foxes at play. When you think about the variety of nocturnal creatures, nighttime is really the best time to be at the zoo.
The Tech Museum of Innovation is a winner for anyone over 7 years of age. Some younger children with older minds may find enjoyment at this marvelous attraction but the attention spans of very young children may make this inappropriate for them. The activities and exhibits can be quite challenging, but it is an excellent way to learn the latest technology. You will emerge with more understanding of the technical world then when you entered. The Net Planet exhibit is a great way for tech-challenged parents as well as tech savvy kids to explore virtual worlds or create web pages. The museum also has scheduled workshops such as trying a little genetic engineering, discover a gene mutation or make your own silicon chip. Admission ranges from $7.00-9.00 but on the 2nd Sunday of each month, admission is free.
These and many more family attractions await you in San Jose. The weather is mild year-round with occasional hot days in the summer. Attractions are generally driver-friendly and most are accessible through public transportation. |
