Travelers have been finding Biloxi, Mississippi the place to be since 1699 when Pierre Lemoyne arrived. Hundreds of years later, Biloxi still offers something for all ages and especially for children.
As a coastal city, Biloxi offers sugar white sands with an ocean view. Along Beach Boulevard numerous pull overs and piers offer access to the sea. Just west of Biloxi and sister city Gulfport, two of the best beaches offer fun in the sun for families. Pass Christian and Long Beach have enough soft white sand and waves for anyone to spend an afternoon or the entire day. Swim, play in the surf, splash, or settle down in a beach chair to relax. The chairs are available free of charge.
If the kids prefer boats to beaches, take them out to the barrier islands and the Gulf Island National Seashore. Take the Ship Island Ferry from the Small Craft Harbor in neighboring Gulfport for an experience they'll remember for a lifetime.
Another option is to take the kids out on a Biloxi Shrimping Trip. The boat leaves from the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor at Highway 90 and Main. The shrimper will fish the calm waters between Biloxi and Deer Island. It's an opportunity to see the variety of sea life caught in shrimping nets. Watch them cast the nets and pull them in to identify every sea creature caught.
Catch a ride on a replica of a Biloxi schooner at Point Cadet Marina on US 90 East. The "Glenn L. Swetman" and the "Mike Sekul" offer two and a half hour beachfront cruises. These are built like the original schooners that harvested seafood from the late 1800's into the 20th century.
At the J.L. Scott Marine Education Center and Aquarium at 115 Beach Boulevard visitors see a variety of exhibits that relate to marine life in the region. A 42,000 gallon aquarium teems with sharks, sea turtles, eels and other creatures.
In nearby Gulfport, the Marine Life Oceanarium in the Joseph Jones Memorial Park offers another look at sea life for the true aquariam enthuasist.
Don't miss the Biloxi Lighthouse at Highway 90 and Porter Avenue. Built in Baltimore, the Old Lighthouse was delivered on a brig to Biloxi and erected in 1848. At the time it was built, it was surrounded by water of three sides but now stands 100 yards north of the shoreline. One tour is given daily.
Learn the story of the local seafood and fishing industry at the Maritime And Seafood Industry Museum at Point Cadet Plaza in Biloxi. Exhibits chronicle the history of the local fisherman as well as give a view of local cuisine. Boatbuilding techniques are shown as are antique tools and other artifacts.
Experience the rich splendor of the past at the Tullis-Toledano Manor at 360 Beach Boulevard. The 1856 home was built as a wedding gift for his bride by cotton broker Christoval Toledanol and is furnished in period style.
Another chapter of history unfolds at Beauvoir - Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library. Beauvoir is the final home of Senator Jefferson Davis who also served as the Confederacy's only President during the Civil War. Artifacts from that conflict are displayed along with personal artifacts and original Davis furnishings. An adjacent cemetery holds more than 700 Confederate soldiers including that of the Unknown Confederate Soldier.
In adjacent Gulfport, children will delight in the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center at 246 Dolan Avenue. Hands-on experience can be found in the Artists' Studio, The Port, Travel the World, and more. A two-story Super Colossal Climbing Sculpture and outdoor tree houses allow kids to expend some energy while having fun.
