In 1893, Katherine Lee Bates traveled by wagon most of the way up Pike¡¯s Peak, near Colorado Springs, Colorado. After completing the ascent to the summit on the back of a mule, she was awestruck by the raw beauty of the view. She scribbled into her notebook some words that went on to become what is thought of as our country¡¯s second anthem, ¡°America the Beautiful.¡± Many years later, Colorado Springs came to be known as the ¡°America the Beautiful City,¡± and rightly so. With Pike¡¯s Peak towering over the west end of town, Garden of the Gods huddled at the bottom, and many other natural wonders, Colorado Springs truly is a beautiful city. For couples looking for a romantic getaway or just a few days of sightseeing, good food, and fun, Colorado Springs offers it all.
Romantic hotel accommodations abound in Colorado Springs. The world-famous Broadmoor Hotel is located at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain on the southwest end of town. Boasting 5-star ratings, the Broadmoor offers romantic walks around its scenic lake, carriage rides, and a concierge who will arrange such adventures as horseback riding, hot air ballooning, white water rafting and rock climbing. The Agate Hill Inn is a bed and breakfast in Manitou Springs, a quaint community nestled at the foot of Pike¡¯s Peak. Only 4 miles from downtown Colorado Springs, Manitou is known for its narrow streets, eclectic restaurants and specialty stores. The Agate offers a cozy and comfortable atmosphere within walking distance of all that Manitou has to offer. Glen Eyrie Castle, a romantic bed and breakfast that sits just at the edge of the Garden of the Gods, is the original home of General William Jackson Palmer, founder of Colorado Springs. Other various hotels for any size budget can be found in all parts of the city.
With 300 days of sunshine each year, Colorado Springs offers a plethora of outdoor activities for couples. The aforementioned Garden of the Gods is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. The giant red sandstone rock formations can be seen from all over town, but the park is free and is a popular place for hikers, horseback riders, rock climbers and nature enthusiasts. If a couple enjoys hiking together, Garden of the Gods isn¡¯t the only place to go; Barr Trail on Pike¡¯s Peak gives hikers many different options for hike length and difficulty. The length of Barr Trail from the base of the mountain in Manitou Springs to the summit of Pike¡¯s Peak is 12.6 miles, but just about halfway up lies Barr camp, a stopping or turn-around spot for many day hikers. Either way, it is an ambitious hike with statistics as follows: the base of the trail is 6,600 feet elevation, Barr Camp is 10,200 feet, and the Pike¡¯s Peak summit is 14,110 feet.
If a couple wants to reach the top of Pike¡¯s Peak, but one or both are not up for the 7,500 feet ascent on foot, the Cog Railway is an easier option. The highest train ride in the United States, the Pike¡¯s Peak Cog Railway has been taking passengers to the summit since 1891. The round trip is just over 3 hours, and at the top of the mountain, couples will enjoy looking for big horn sheep, wooly marmots, and of course the ¡°America the Beautiful¡± view. The summit house has a gift shop with snacks and a small diner. It is a good place to warm up with summer temperatures usually in the 40¡¯s, even in August.
Once back in town, if outdoor fun is still desired, a romantic spot for every couple to see is Seven Falls. Falling 181 feet down the granite walls of Cheyenne Canyon, Seven Falls are seven separate waterfalls, each falling into the next one, in a stair-step pattern. The park provides a 224-step staircase that leads to trails above the falls and at night, colorful lights are lit for a rainbow effect, lighting each fall with a different color. Not far from Seven Falls is the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and it¡¯s not just for children. Couples will enjoy feeding the giraffes, seeing even more spectacular views of the city and riding on a historic antique carousel.
Yet another spectacular place to visit is the United States Air Force Academy, just north of Colorado Springs. The easily recognizable spires of the chapel are seen from many areas of the city, but a view at close range ¨C and inside ¨C is imperative. The entire Academy is an impressive and beautiful institution that turns out some of the most respected officers in the military.
There are plenty of other outdoor activities in the Colorado Springs area for couples, but if a couple is more the indoor type and wants to learn about a town¡¯s history and walk hand-in-hand through museums, Colorado Springs is just the place. Rodeo lovers will find the ProRodeo Hall of Fame a treat to visit. For those interested in more mechanized modes of transportation, the city offers the Pike¡¯s Peak Auto Climb Museum and the Historical Railway Foundation Museum. The Bear Creek Nature Center educates visitors about characteristics of the ecosystem. The 3rd Cavalry Museum at historic Fort Carson will take visitors back in time to the Mexican War, 150 years ago. A soothing indoor visit where couples can quietly sit and enjoy paintings or statues, is the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Couples can take a tour or stroll through, gazing at the southwestern art at their own pace.
So much activity will cause a pair to work up an appetite. Mexican food can be found throughout the city, but two establishments are unique to Colorado Springs. In the downtown area, Jose Muldoon¡¯s is home of the world¡¯s largest Margarita, and Vallejo¡¯s offers authentic Mexican food, all made on site by a family still guarding Grandma¡¯s secret recipes. The Craftwood Inn in Manitou boasts fine dining with produce and wild game all from the state of Colorado. If Italian food is preferred, Old Chicago Pizza gives the term ¡°deep dish¡± a whole new meaning and offers one-of-a-kind minestrone soup. Giuseppe¡¯s Depot Restaurant is housed in the old city train station, with trains still chugging past the windows outside. The restaurant is large, but the food is impeccable. For dessert, there is but one place for couples to visit: the romantic Michelle¡¯s Chocolatier and Ice Cream, Inc. on Tejon Street, downtown. They are proud to serve ice cream that is churned on the premises daily, as well as homemade toppings and ¡°kettle- fresh¡± chocolates. The d¨¦cor is that of old Greece, with columns, artifacts, and pictures reminiscent of the ancient world.
A couple might want to wrap up an evening by visiting one of the many nightspots in Colorado Springs. The Hatch Cover Restaurant and Lounge offers live entertainment and karaoke. Cowboys is a foot-stomping good time for couples wanting to two-step the night away. And the Sunbird Restaurant offers a candlelight atmosphere, jazz and contemporary music, and a panoramic view of the city that wows everyone who walks through the doors.
Before turning in for the night, couples might like to take a moonlight stroll along the wide walking paths that adorn the edge of Monument Creek. The creek meanders along the western edge of the city, with downtown nearby. It is the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Colorado Springs is surely a haven for couples seeking various types of entertainment and relaxation. The next time a vacation for two is a possibility, visit the romantic America the Beautiful City and see why it bears that name.
