This is a list of the top ten things to do in the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The list is comprised of non-seasonal events that are available year round and they are also things that are usually of little to no cost also.
Number 10: The Children¡¯s Museum
If you have children, this is a great place for them and a whole lot of fun for you too. You get to watch your child play make believe. There are a variety of hands-on activities that teach you about science or nature. There is a whole area where the children can learn about different careers. For example, there is a small town where they can learn what it is like to be a doctor; the kids can wear a stethoscope and look at patients in the actual doctor¡¯s office. They can learn what it is like to work in the grocery store, or the police station, or in any number of other jobs. There is a minimal entry fee to the Children¡¯s Museum.
Number 9: The Ordway
The Ordway theatre is a beautiful old building where you might catch a play or concert. Costs are dependent on the show. This can be expensive sometimes, but still worth the visit to a very nostalgic piece of Saint Paul.
Number 8: Como Lake
Even on a brisk winter day, a visit to Como Lake is time well spent. You can tour the Pavilion building on the lake and have some coffee or snacks while watching the water or watching the ice, depending the time of the year. If the weather allows, you can walk around the lake. It is about a three-mile walk with a great view. During the summer, you can even rent a foot-powered paddleboat from the Pavilion. No matter what time of year, or what the weather has in store for you, Como Lake has some beautiful scenery. There is no admission fee to visit the lake
Number 7: Como Zoo
Since you just left the lake, why not stop at the nearby Como Zoo. The zoo is about a mile from the lake and is also open year round. There is an amazing selection of animals to see there. They have giraffes, polar bears, seals, grizzly bears, emus, lions, tigers, and more. Again, there is no cost to visit the zoo. You walk by an occasional donation box, but it is not expected.
Number 6: The Xcel Energy Center
Minnesota is known for its hockey history and the Xcel Energy Center is the home of the Minnesota Wild NHL hockey team. Even if the Wild are in the off-season there is a museum that is dedicated to the Wild and the history of hockey in Minnesota inside the building that is worth seeing. There is no cost to attend the museum and various displays unless you decide to pick up a souvenir from the Official Minnesota Wild souvenir shop.
Number 5: The Mississippi River
While you are in the downtown area, you should stop by the river. There are miles of trails along the bank of the Mississippi River. You can either walk along or ride your bike along the trail. Even if the weather doesn¡¯t cooperate, you can just go for a drive along the river and take in the scenic views that include the Saint Paul skyline.
Number 4: The Science Museum of Minnesota.
The Science Museum offers several floors full of hands- on activities that are fun and educational at the same time. Whether you are visiting by yourself or go with the family, there is a lot to do and see here. There is also a full sized Omni theatre that has a movie screen that wraps around the entire dome of the theatre. The only cost is a small entry fee to the building and the cost of tickets to see the movie which is usually 30 ¨C45 minutes long depending on what they are featuring.
Number 3: The Summit Brewery
The city of Saint Paul has been home to a brewery for over 150 years. The current beer made in Saint Paul is Summit Beer, but in the past Schmidt, Pig¡¯s Eye, and Saint Pauli Girl brands have been manufactured here. You can call ahead and arrange a free tour through the fully functioning brewery. During the tour you will be able to learn and see all kinds of things and of course, you can¡¯t beat the price for this adventure.
Number 2: The Saint Paul Cathedral
No matter what your religious background, you will want to see the amazing architecture of the Cathedral. The design is amazing and appreciated by all that see it. There are several domes that are all surrounding one main dome that is covered with murals that were all hand painted over 150 years ago. People come from all over the world to see the Cathedral and they are never disappointed. The building is also perched on top of the one of the highest hills in the city, which allows for some amazing views. There is also no cost for this visit.
Number 1: The Minnesota State Capitol Building
And the grand finale, the greatest thing to do in capital city of Saint Paul, Minnesota is visit the State Capitol. During regular business hours, you can get free tours of the capitol building, which was designed to resemble the Nation¡¯s capitol. You can see the beautiful design from the outside, but inside there is so much to do and see, you will need to take at least an hour or two for this trip, longer if you have the time. There are several historical displays scattered throughout the building including many paintings, photographs, and various historical artifacts that relate to the history of the state of Minnesota. You will also be taken through the Governor¡¯s conference room on your information filled tour. Then if the weather permits, you can visit the Minnesota War Memorial on the front lawn of the Capitol building.
Whether you have lived here your entire life or you are just going to stop by for a couple of days, whether you are coming by yourself on business or with the family on vacation, whether you have lots of money to spend or you are here on a shoestring budget, there are lot of things for the city or Saint Paul to offer.
