The island of St. Martin/St. Maarten is the smallest island in the world to have been split into two countries.  The island, located in the middle of the island chain in the Caribbean, has been shared cordially by the French and the Dutch for almost 360 years.  

Although the nation borders are almost undetectable, each side has preserved much of their distinct culture.  In general, the French side, St. Martin, tends to be more relaxed and luxurious while the Dutch side, St. Maarten, tends to be more active and informal.  

If you¡¯re planning a trip to St. Martin/St. Maarten, keep the following attractions in mind to make the most of your trip.  

1.  Fort St. Louis.  This fortification is the largest historical site in St. Martin, named after the French king, Louis XVI.  The Fort St. Louis was originally built in 1767 to protect the island from invaders.  

If you can make the steep climb up to the fort¡¯s summit, you¡¯ll be rewarded with fantastic views of the island and the surrounding Caribbean.  

2.  Marigot Market.  Every Wednesday and Saturday morning local vendors set up shop along the wharves on the Boulevard de France.  The outdoor market offers a large variety of native produce, tropical spices and fresh seafood.  

If you are looking for a casual atmosphere where you can eat good food and mingle with the locals, head to the Marigot Market, located on the French side of the island.  

3.  St. Martin Museum.  This national museum is committed to preserving St. Martin¡¯s culture and history.  A newer addition to the museum displays a variety of pre-Columbian artifacts, including a reproduction of a 1,500 year old burial mound and artifacts dating back to 1800 BC.  The museum is open daily.

4.  Grand Case.  This little fishing village is known for gourmet foods and distinctive architecture.  Approximately 20 restaurants are located on Main Street, offering some of the best meals on the island.  Grand Case is located on the French side of the island.  

5.  Paradise Peak.  This 1,400 foot mountain is the highest point on St. Martin.  There are two observation decks at the mountain¡¯s peak where you can take in breathtaking views of the island.  

6.  Butterfly Farm.  Walk among hundreds of rare and exotic butterflies from around the world at the Butterfly Farm, located on the French side of the island.  Tours of the farm are available, which show the amazing evolution of caterpillars into butterflies.  Get there early in the morning if you want to see the birth of a butterfly as it emerges from its cocoon.

7.  Carib Isle Plantation.  This working watermelon plantation is located on the French side of the island.  Tours of the plantation are available, offering a lesson in the history of the delicious fruit.  

8.  Cupecoy Bay/Beach.  If you are looking for a quiet beach, check out Cupecoy Bay, a clothing optional beach on the Dutch side of the island.  Low sandstone cliffs surround the beach, creating small, semi-private coves.  If you want to claim a cove, make sure to get there early.  

9.  Maho Bay.  If you are looking for a little more action, check out Maho Bay, a resort area on the Dutch side of the island.  Take a break from the sun by checking out one of the nearby restaurants or try your luck at the large resort/casino.

Be warned, this beach is located at the end of an airport runway.  The beach is nice if you don¡¯t mind dealing with the low-flying planes. For those who love a thrill, the experience of watching a Boeing 747 fly directly overhead can be amazing. 

10.  St. Maarten Zoo.  This zoo, located on the Dutch side of the island, is home to approximately 60 species of tropical animals, many of which you¡¯ve probably never heard of, including capybaras, the world¡¯s largest rodents and hamadryas baboons.
