The Hill
The Hill has long been known as the place to go in St. Louis for outstanding Italian food. Below you'll find the top four picks for this historic St. Louis neighborhood.
1.Dominic's Restaurant. This place is truly a St. Louis institution. One of the more expensive dining establishments in the city, Dominic's features some of the best Italian food in the country. With an extensive menu, knowledgeable staff and a huge wine list, this is a great restaurant to visit for a special occasion.
2.Trattoria Marcella. Another excellent location for delicious Italian food, this restaurant is almost always packed. But the food is well worth the wait. Like Dominic's this restaurant is somewhat pricey, so it's best for special occasions.
3.Cunetto's House of Pasta. At a far more reasonable price than Dominic's or Trattoria Marcella, Cunetto's features a menu boasting more than 30 different pastas, plus melt-in-your-mouth veal, chicken and beef dishes. Be sure to get there early, though. Cunetto's doesn't take reservations, and the place is very popular among the locals.
4.LoRusso's Cucina. Another Italian-American favorite, LoRusso's is reasonable priced and casual. With a menu full of rich pastas and delicious veal dishes, this restaurant also boasts St. Louis classics like toasted ravioli and mudega.
Downtown St. Louis
This area of St. Louis is truly experiencing a revival. Not only are more businesses being attracted downtown, more excellent restaurants are migrating there, too.
1.Tony's. Another fabulous Italian eatery, Tony's used to be on the Hill, but moved to the downtown area several years ago. Although Tony's food is pricey, their menu, wine list and service ensures you'll get your money's worth.
2.Tangerine. This restaurant is truly a unique experience. Not only is the decor unconventional (you might be seated in a giant plastic hand, for instance), the restaurant offers a widely varied menu. From Mexican to Thai, Tangerine offers outstanding food at affordable prices. A formerly vegetarian restaurant, this place now offers both meat and vegetarian fare.
3.Charlie Gitto's Pasta House. Another St. Louis favorite, this restaurant has an establishment both downtown and on the Hill. Well, known for their delicious pastas, such as gnocci, fettuccine and spaghetti, this place is a favorite with both locals and tourists. Even better, it's very affordable.
4.The Tap Room. If you're in the mood for English pub food, the Tap Room is definitely the place to go. With a delicious rarebit appetizer, dozens of microbrew beers on tap, and an unexpected selection of sandwiches, pastas, and more exotic fare, this St. Louis eatery is affordable and offers delicious food. Served with both spiced ketchup and a delicious white sauce, the pub fries are a must-have starter.
Soulard
This historic neighborhood offers an unusual selection of food in interesting places. From Cajun to American to Mexican, Soulard provides visitors with a delicious offering.
1.Lagniappe's. An unusual mix of New Orleans Cajun and Italian food, this restaurant offers a friendly atmosphere and excellent stead, gumbo, breads and salads. Their crawfish etoufe and Bill's Special Gumbo are marvelous, and their selections are affordable.
2.John D. McGurk's Irish Pub. This bar and grill has excellent food and a lively atmosphere. Featuring Irish decor and a huge selection of beer, this restaurant offers delicious hearty stews, lots of potato dishes and wonderful burgers. With live Irish music, this is definitely the place to go if you're in a party mood.
3.Lemp Mansion Mystery Dinner Theater. This is definitely one of the more colorful dining experiences in St. Louis. Rumored to be a haunted house, the Lemp Mansion offers delicious food and an enjoyable evening. If you're in the mood to solve a mystery, this is the place to be. The Lemp Mansion is also a bed and breakfast, so if you're in the mood for a ghost hunt, you can stay overnight, too.
4.Frazer's Brown Bag. This restaurant is a little out-of-the-way in Soulard, but it is well worth discovering. One of Soulard's best kept secrets, Frazer's offers a delicious lunch and dinner. Featuring a delicious mufaletta sandwich for the lunch crowd and gourmet entrees for dinner, this restaurant also boasts an extensive wine list and knowledgeable wait staff.
Lafayette Square
Often considered an extension of Soulard, Lafayette Square is another historic St. Louis neighborhood. Featuring a yearly house tour, this neighborhood boasts great restaurants and beautiful Victorian houses, many of which are undergoing renovation. This neighborhood is becoming even more popular, and is definitely an area to keep your eye on.
1.Bailey's Chocolate Bar. This is an excellent place to visit for a romantic dessert or cup of coffee. Although Bailey's does offer lunch selections, as their name implies, they are best known for their confections. With delicious chocolate martinis, spicy rich hot chocolate and a huge selection of cheeses, both chocolate and non-chocolate desserts, this place has something to suit anybody.
2.Eleven Eleven. This is a new restaurant in the Lafayette Square area, and so far it is doing very well. With a wide selection of delicious entrees, this place boasts ¡°wine country¡± fare and offers an unusual selection of appetizers, dinners, flatbreads and desserts. A little on the pricey side, this restaurant is a great place for a date or to bring a friend.
3.Arcelia's Mexican Restaurant. Arguably the best place to go in St. Louis for Mexican, Arcelia's is a delicious chips and salsa. One of the best dishes on the menu is their enchiladas cremas. Be careful, though: this place is packed at lunch and someone busy at dinner, too, and the restaurant is fairly small, so you might want to go early.
4.Ricardo's Italian Cafe. Another St. Louis classic, Ricardo's Italian Cafe is a great favorite with the locals. With rich pastas and pizzas, this place is an excellent choice for dinner or lunch.
Grand
The South Grand area of St. Louis is another up-and-coming neighborhood. Experiencing a renaissance in housing and culture, Grand offers not just restaurants, but attractions like the Fox Theater and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
1.Pho Grand. This is the place for great Vietnamese food. With a selection of delicious noodle dishes, plus tofu and meat entrees, Pho Grand is big on flavor.
2.The King and I. Delicious Thai cuisine is the rule here. Featuring noodle and rice dishes, like pad Thai, pad ped and more, this restaurant also offers tofu and meat entrees. They truly have something for every palate. Also, they will make your dish as spicy or mild as you like ¨C all you have to do is ask.
3.Gulf Coast Cafe. An unusual Mediterranean restaurant, this place is a hidden gem. With rich pasta dishes, delicious seafood and chicken, Gulf Coast offers wonderful food and a relaxed atmosphere.
4.Black Thorn. This is one of the most delicious dives you'll ever visit. With fabulous pizza and cheese bread, the Black Thorn is a popular place, especially among college students and St. Louis natives. The atmosphere is a bit loud ¨C after all, it is a bar ¨C but the food is well worth it.
Central West End
Yet another historic neighborhood, the Central West End offers unique dining experiences, plus great nightlife. Packed full of restaurants and night clubs like Viva, a nightclub that offers Salsa dancing, Reggae music and everything in between, this neighborhood is great for a night on the town. Even better, it's very close to the famous Chase Park Plaza Hotel, a historic hotel that offers its own selection of restaurants, plus a movie theater.
1.Zoe Pan Asian Cafe. Winner of several awards, the Zoe Pan Asian Cafe offers delicious, affordable Asian food. Not only do they have an extensive menu, they also are well known for their cocktails.
2.Majestic Restaurant & Bar. Though few are aware of it, St. Louis also boasts several fabulous Greek restaurants, and the Majestic is one of them. The place looks deceptively like a diner, and it is open for breakfast lunch and dinner, but the lunch and dinner menus really stand out. With delicious gyros, Greek salads and comfort food like meatloaf, this restaurant is a favorite with many of the locals.
3.Nik's Wine Bar & Bistro. This quirky neighborhood bar and restaurant offers live music on the weekends and an extensive wine list. They also offer houkas with your choice of tobacco flavors. Not many partake, but those who do swear by it. Although the menu is not as large as many restaurants', the food here is delicious. With delicious appetizers, entree offerings and desserts, Nik's is an excellent choice for a relaxed dining experience, especially in the summer, when the restaurant offers outdoor seating.
4.Chez Leon. This French restaurant offers delicious food at surprisingly reasonable prices. With a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere, Chez Leon offers both traditional French fare and modern food, plus a great wine list and exceptional service.
