St. Croix is the largest of the three major US Virgin Islands, and has something to entice every traveler to its shores. You can reach St. Croix via ferry from many of the other Caribbean islands that are close in proximity. Visitors can also make a connecting flight from many major US cities through San Juan, Puerto Rico. Flights come into Alexander Hamilton Airport on the southern coast of the island. St. Croix is also a favorite stop for cruise ships traveling the Caribbean because of all the shopping it has to offer.
When you arrive, you can either rent a car or travel by taxi. Remember to drive on the left-hand side of the road and check your brakes often as there are many hills in this part of the world. If you choose not to rent a car, you can take a taxi to explore and sightsee. Some taxis can be hired for the day; others are just a point-to-point travel arrangement. On St. Croix, you generally agree on the rate ahead of time or abide by the posting at the airports and other popular taxi stops. There is also a thorough bus system that runs between the two main cities of Frederiksted and Christiansted as well as the airport. The buses are a cheaper method of transport but you may have to sacrifice some time waiting on the schedule.
Of course, there are plenty of beaches and water sports to please everyone in your crowd. One of the longest beaches in the Virgin Islands is Sandy Point. It is perfect for walking and the water is so calm and clear; perfect for swimming, snorkeling and exploring. Some of the best scuba and snorkel beaches are Cane Bay, Davis Bay and the spot named for the Cormorant Beach Club. There is a very long reef at the latter beach which makes it ideal for snorkeling treasures. One other highly recommended beach to check out while you are visiting is Grapetree Beach. It is long, clean and offers a variety of water sports for the outdoor enthusiast.
If you are into windsurfing, the beaches on the north coast will offer you the best wind and experience. Some of these include Reef Beach, Tamarind Reef Beach and Cramer Park. Cramer Park is a public space which has a picnic area as well as a bar and restaurant. In Christiansted, there is shop that offers windsurfing lessons or kayak tours. You can also rent windsurfers, boogie boards, sailboats, jet skis and other water sport gear.
For anyone who loves horses, there are trail rides available that traverse the island and show you some of the beautiful plantations along the way. If you would rather play golf, there are a few courses to choose from. The most popular is an 18-hole course located at the Carambola Beach Club. This course has beautiful flowers and vegetation lining the holes and the area as a whole. There is a 9-hole course known as the Reef and another 18-hole course at the Buccaneer. The Buccaneer is a beautiful course which overlooks the Caribbean on many holes and also offer lessons if you so desire.
There are many hiking trails on the western portion of St. Croix. If you are an avid hiker and are looking for more to explore, you might enjoy neighboring St. John in addition. Most of St. John is a national park meant for hikers. St. Croix has wonderful flora and fauna to showcase for visitors. There are fresh mango and lime trees, mixed with trees such as the kapok and mahogany that are not seen in this area outside of this region. If you have rented a car, you can also explore some of the footpaths that line the roads. Be careful not to lose your way while exploring this beautiful part of St. Croix.
Buck Island is a tiny island about 2 miles from the mainland which offers visitors a little of everything. The main attraction here is the underwater snorkeling trail. You can take a guided tour from St. Croix to Buck Island or charter a boat to take you over. Once on Buck Island, you can hike, sunbath or of course, snorkel the trail on your own. There are also scuba trips which leave from St. Croix that center around the reefs here.
There are many interesting sites around St. Croix besides beaches. One such site is the Cruzan Rum Factory. Tours are given at this factory that manufactures the famous rum bearing the Cruzan name. Free taste tests come as part of the tour. There is also a tiny aquarium, known as the St. Croix Aquarium, which is notable because of the great work they do in rotating the animals and fish. There is a touch pool which features sea stars, and the odd looking fat sea cucumbers. This is a great outing for kids who may need a break from the sun. There is also a botanical garden near Frederiksted that is well worth the visit for anyone. The garden offers a self-guided walking tour and also has a small gift shop to pick up some items of interest.
St. Croix offers a wide variety of shopping for visitors from all over. Many people prefer shopping on St. Croix as opposed to St. Thomas since it is not as busy and offers many of the same goods. You can find jewelry, pottery, art of all sorts, clothing, perfume and souvenirs of a tropical flair. Christiansted is the center of most of the shopping, but you can also visit Frederiksted for some interesting shops. St. Croix also offers many different cuisines at numerous dining establishments. There are restaurants in each city, as well as scattered throughout the island and at each of the major hotels.
Whether you choose to stay in a hotel or rent one of the privately owned condos that St. Croix has to offer, you will no doubt enjoy your stay. As you can see, there are activities for everyone you may be traveling with and enough beaches for those who just want to sit and relax. St. Croix offers tranquility and relaxation with just the right mix of activity to make the perfect vacation for everyone. |
