There are choices to be made in planning a spelunking/caving trip. Do you want to see wild caves or show caves? How much equipment do you already have, or do you plan to buy? How adventurous do you want to be?
Those questions may cause others. What is the difference between spelunking and show caving? What is a caver?
Show caves are wild caves that have been ※tamed§ - usually made commercial. The venture will install safe walkways and various kinds of lighting. Examples of show caves include some of the most famous destinations: Mammoth Cave in Kentucky, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, Luray Caverns in Virginia and Ruby Falls in Tennessee. Show caves are for the entire family of all ages; a tour guide is provided and visits require no special equipment.
Wild caves are those for the adventurous 每 officially called ※cavers§ or ※spelunkers.§ The word ※spelunking§ is a term that is less common nowadays and is sometimes used to refer to those who explore unprepared. The term ※caver§ has become more widely accepted for those who seek out caves and are prepared for any type of caving environment. Cavers work with landowners to protect the caves and usually are involved in cave rescues when needed.
If you are just learning about caving, it is wise to check with a local college or a surveyor*s office. Local caving clubs and books can also help determine equipment needed and places to get started. Four very important things to know before going into your first cave 每 always have proper equipment, NEVER go into a cave when it is raining, always take it slow and easy in your explorations, and NEVER go alone.
Some of the best places to go caving are in West Virginia, Missouri, and Kentucky. Other regions of the country such as Utah, Washington, Oregon, California and Tennessee, also have a variety of caves, so an explorer may not have to travel very far to discover new territory.
Cavers in Missouri have over 5,300 registered wild caves to explore - mapped and untamed. The area which surrounds the Lake of the Ozarks hosts over 300 mapped wild caves, making it a great caving destination.
The southwestern area of West Virginia, near the city of Lewisburg, is a great area for cavers 每 there are over 300 wild caves to be explored. Around the area, visitors will find pastures, fields and sinkholes 每 which signal caverns may lay underneath the surface.
The central and western portions of Kentucky, in the Mammoth Cave region, are good destinations for cavers, but it helps to know someone in the area. Property owners have decided not to register their wild caves because they have learned that amateur explorers cause damage to the caves 每 they prefer to have more experienced cavers on their site, so the lack of registration keeps the amateurs away.
For visits to ※record breaking§ caves, try one of the following: the deepest cave in the United States is Neffs Canyon Cave, located 45 minutes from Salt Lake City, Utah. It is 1186 ft deep. The deepest cave in the world is Cheve Cave, located in Mexico*s Sierra de Juarez region. It is still being explored, but is thought to have tunnels deeper than 6,500 feet. The longest cave is Mammoth Cave, located in central Kentucky.
Caving can be a rewarding experience, as long as the proper precautions are taken. Special care needs to be taken in protecting these natural beauties. |
