The city of St. John¡¯s is located on the island of Newfoundland/Labrador. On July 1st, Canada Day, the residents of St. John¡¯s are the first in Canada to celebrate the birth of the country. St. John¡¯s has many unique festivals such as the Royal St. John¡¯s Regatta. This Regatta is the oldest continuing sporting event in North America, dating back to 1825. Even if the weather is too windy or rainy the event is cancelled, just rescheduled. Another first for St. John¡¯s is that they are the first in North America to welcome in the New Year.

St. John¡¯s boasts many museums. There is the Blackhead Chapel Museum, originally constructed in 1897 as a one-room school. The Fort Amherst Lighthouse, Museum and Tea Room contain a museum, photo gallery, tea room and craft shop. A unique museum is housed in the former light keeper¡¯s dwelling. For a completely original museum visit the James O¡¯Mara Pharmacy Museum. This museum depicts a drug store dating back to 1895 and is furnished with antique store fixtures, pharmaceutical implements and much more. For those interested in the railroad and ocean there is the Railway Costal Museum. The former train station exhibits 100 years of history on the Newfoundland Railway and the Coastal Boat services.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities St. John¡¯s offers numerous walking trails. Trails wind not only through the heart of the city but along magnificent coastlines. The Grand Concourse Walking Trails cross three municipalities and is made up of a network of boardwalks over a series of lakes, ponds and rivers. It is popular for bird-watching and the enjoyment of native flora. The East Coast Trail is approximately 600 miles long and encompasses abandoned communities, lighthouses and ecological preserves. The Trail is open to all levels of experience from amateur to expert. The most extensive is the Newfoundland T¡¯Railway. Still under construction it currently extends for 548 miles and is a multi-use trail. It is built for not only hikers but cyclists, horseback riders, snowmobilers, ATVer¡¯s and cross-country skiers. More plans for expansion are underway and when complete the T¡¯Railway will be approximately 1,000 miles long, making it the longest in the world.

For those with a fondness for old churches, St. John¡¯s offers a few historic ones. The Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was built in 1843 and is an excellent example of ecclesiastical Gothic Revival Style. The accompanying cemetery contains graves dating from the early 1700¡¯s until 1849. The church itself was founded in 1699. The George Street United Church is the oldest United Church in St. John¡¯s and was built in 1872. The church is constructed from Newfoundland stone and slate from the hills surrounding the city.

General historical sites include a Court House, Colonial Building and the Government House, to name a few. The Court House is made of local granite and sandstone and was built 1901. The Court House Steps were the site of a produce market and public gallows in the 19th Century. Newfoundland¡¯s last public hanging was of a stage coach robber in 1835. The Colonial Building was opened in 1850 and served a dual function; to be the home of the legislature and to serve as a public market for the town residents. The Government House is unique in that it is one of the few in North America to be surrounded by a moat. It currently serves as the home of the Lt. Governor as well as a guest home for members of the Royal family who are visiting.

St. John¡¯s is a city with a long standing history and beautiful scenery. It contains many unique, one of a kind structures and sites in North America. It offers a little bit of something for everyone and welcomes all who venture to the island of Newfoundland/Labrador.
