If your idea of the perfect vacation includes water activities, then Seychelles is the place for you. Seychelles is a group of 155 islands, which lay off the coast of Africa. In addition to beautiful beaches and crystal clear water, it is a haven for wildlife. There are thousands of birds and tropical fish. If you are interested in birds, then include a visit to the Bird, Cousin, Aride or Fregate islands, which are bird sanctuaries.
There are four marine national parks and more than 150 species of tropical fish have been identified. Picture yourself snorkeling off the reef and seeing beautiful fish and corral. Dolphins and porpoises are common and the islands are known for game fishing.
January is the wettest month, July and August are the driest and every month fluctuates between 75 and 88 F with humidity at around 80%. Windsurfing and sailing are best around May and October. Diving is best in March, April, May, September, October and November. Room rates are the highest and the busiest in December, January, July and August.
Okay, let¡¯s get down to business! What do we have to do to get there and start having fun!
Visas are not required for the visit but you will need an onward ticket, booked accommodations and sufficient funds for stay. A one-month Visitor¡¯s Permit will be issued upon acceptance of the application. A $50 service fee is levied on all adult visitors which is included in the price of the airline ticket.
There are not many festivals in Seychelles. But the major one is the Festival Kreol, which preserves and promotes the Creole culture. This is held in October for one week.
The tourist board fixes prices for hotel accommodation and camping is forbidden. You can exist on $5 a day if you use the less expensive guesthouses, avoid watersports and eat lean. I suggest using a tourist package that will let you enjoy some sports, eat good meals and enjoy yourself.
You will get a better exchange with traveler¡¯s checks than cash. There are banks in Victoria and the larger hotels can exchange currency. Markets are open for haggling so brush up on your skills and get the best price for those souvenirs.
Seychelles is all about watersports so get ready to enjoy! There is snorkeling, diving, windsurfing and deep-sea fishing. If your thing is on land, there is rock climbing and great hiking.
Let¡¯s get to know some of the islands. Victoria is the major port and only town of Seychelles. The Natural History Museum is in the center of town. They have a pretty diverse collection there, such as, bones of an extinct crocodile, giant robber crabs, dried out fish, and a deformed piglet in a jar. The Botanical Gardens are highly recommended for walks among a variety of trees. It¡¯s one of the best places for cheap eats.
The best beach is Ansa Lazio. It has glorious white soft sand and lively waves. The water is a magical turquoise color. There is also great snorkeling at the end of the beach. The beaches are protected by a reef, which makes the water like a warm bath. It¡¯s shallow, warm and safe. Buses travel from Grand Anse all around the beaches.
Cousin Island is a nature reserve and home to several endangered species and a breeding ground for seabirds and turtles. You can only visit the island on a tour.
Beau Vallon is one of the largest and most popular beaches. The sand is good, clean and free of rocks. There are platforms in the ocean that you can swim to. It has a gas station, a bank, and some souvenir shops. This beach is 2 miles away from Victoria so you can either walk or catch a bus.
The snorkeling is the best at the St. Anne Marine National Park, which is near Victoria. Moyenee is the best island for it but it can only be reached by tour. This island is known for buried treasure and ghosts. Imagine the stories you will be telling when you get back home!
Aldabra is one of the world¡¯s largest coral atolls stretching 14 miles east to west and enclosing a huge tidal lagoon, which is sometimes, home to tiger sharks and manta rays. This is the original island of giant tortoises and there are about 200,000 of them living there. Jacques Cousteau filmed most of his documentary, The Silent World on this island. If you want to visit this island, you have to charter a boat in Victoria or fly to Desroches and charter a boat from there.
So there you have it. Seychelles is a great place for watersports and hiking and just plain relaxing with nature. Remember to make contact with a travel agent for all the necessary details and tours and enjoy yourself. |
