The tent¡¯s set up, you¡¯ve got a table and a couple of chairs. You¡¯re good to go - or maybe not - not if you¡¯re planning an extended camping trip. Keeping the set-up to a minimum when you¡¯re camping for a few days is the way to go, but when camping for a couple of weeks or longer, take the time to set the camp up properly and you¡¯ll have a lot less hassle and a lot more fun.
Certainly you¡¯ll need to set up a spot for building fires, or placing the grill. Use dry sticks and bark to start a fire in the grill if you don¡¯t want to haul a gigantic load of charcoal. Find a spot with no low-hanging branches or nearby vegetation, to prevent accidental fires. The table should be nearby - use it for setting foods on while cooking, or set another table near the grill to hold food and utensils.
Set up a dish area with a bucket for washing, a bucket for rinsing and a table for drying. If you rinse dishes in a nearby creek or river, make sure to boil water to dip the dishes in before setting them aside to dry. Natural water sources contain bacteria which can cause all sorts of ailments.
Store non-perishable foods in the vehicle. Keep perishable foods in a cooler that has holes drilled in the top and bottom. The cooler should be one that locks. Place the cooler in a nearby river or creek, then put rocks around and atop the cooler. The holes will allow cool water to run through the cooler and keep it from floating away.
Tape ticks together to make a towel rack for drying wet garments. Lay out a long stick, then tape another stick, at right, angles to the long stick. Do this on both ends, then stand the small ends in the ground. Or, put two forked sticks in the ground, several feet apart, then lay a long branch across the forked sticks.
Hang lanterns in trees. Have secure spots for setting up hurricane lamps. The lamps should be on sturdy tables or the ground. You can encircle the camp with light by setting aluminum cans around the campsite and mixing sand with kerosene. Throw in a match and stir occasionally. If the light grows dim, stir in a little more kerosene. Be sure each can is sitting in an area that is completely cleared of dry leaves and grass.
Set up a bathroom by tying sheets to rope, then securing by tying them to trees. Form a square of sheets to form the room, then make a stick commode. Lay two sticks, about two and a half feet each, down on the ground, about two feet apart, and lay one more across the top of the original two. Tape the top stick to the two spaced sticks, a couple of inches from the ends. From the bottom end of the two spaced sticks, measure up about a foot and a half, then lay a stick there, across the two spaced sticks. Tape this stick into place. Now tape two sticks, one on each end, to the last stick you placed, pointing the opposite direction. This should now look like a stool with one stick to sit on, one stick across the back, and two legs on each side, at the bottom.
Make a washstand by gathering three equal-sized sticks, and placing them in a teepee arrangement. Tape or bind them with rope. Set the stand by the table, then place a bowl on top for hand washing. You can make a larger version of this for bathing, and tie dark plastic around the area for privacy. Set the shower away from the camping area or you¡¯ll have lots of mud. Look for an area where the water will run downhill, away from the campground. You can also buy camping showers now, which hang from a tree, you fill them with water, and turn on when ready. The water simply pours out, but you can quickly wash body and hair.
It¡¯s hard to dress in most tents, as anyone who has tried knows. You can set up another area with sheets for ease and privacy while changing clothes. The area should be near the towel rack for hanging wet items.
In cold weather, set up a rock fireplace to keep you warm, yet safe. Clear an area of all leaves, loose dirt, twigs and grass. Encircle the area with large stones. Use this area to keep a fire going for heat. The same enclosure can be used for cooking.
Set up a temporary bedroom in the back of a pick up truck. Toss in a mattress and some blankets, and you¡¯ll be peacefully sleeping under the stars.
