In a survey of summer tourists in San Francisco, the biggest complaint was ¡°the weather¡­¡±  Sadly, the city wasn¡¯t able to improve on that.  However, if your vacation schedule is flexible, April and October are the consistently sunniest months for a stay in the ¡°city on the hills¡±.  October is my personal favorite month in the city as the best time to take in free outdoor concerts, neighborhood fairs, artist¡¯s Open Studios, baseball games, kayaking on the bay or a stroll through Golden Gate Park.  

Many San Francisco tourists get stuck in the usual traps ¨C Fisherman¡¯s Wharf, Chinatown, and the Powell/Market Cable Cars.  There is so much more to San Francisco, and all you need is a city map, a list of bus routes, and some transportation tokens.

The city is divided up into a myriad of districts, each with its own flavor and interests.  The most recently re-developed area of excitement is the SOMA district (South Of Market Area).  This district is home to the SF Giants Baseball team, where you can view a game from the SBC stadium, or rent a kayak and wait for Barry Bonds to plop balls into the China Basin Channel south of the ball park.  The Willie Mays Plaza is a delightful area and opens onto the Embarcadero Esplanade.  A stroll toward the Ferry Building, along the bench lined waterfront will thrill you with scenic views, eateries and cafes.  As you approach the Ferry Building you may see a number of slightly congested area of the regular outdoor Farmer¡¯s or Artisan Market.  While inside the Ferry Building is a more ¡°high end¡± selection of delectable delights.  The Ferry Building hosts a Harvest Festival in October and allows for visitors to sample all the goodies available while listening to local musicians strum in the sun.  You can board a Ferry at this location and take a pleasant trip around the bay.

Across the street and through the Embarcadero Plaza, the California Cable starts its route at California and Drumm.  This Cable Car is the least crowded and you will most likely have the seat of your choice.  You get all the thrills of the crowded Powell/Market Cable Cars with much less hassle.  The California Cable Car will take you past the Financial District, Chinatown, Nob Hill and the beautiful Grace Cathedral.  Be sure to get a transfer ticket when you pay your fare as this allows you to get on and off any place along the way.

Meanwhile, back in the SOMA district, you can cross the street and stroll down Howard toward 3rd Street and the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art).  The entire SOMA district is a thriving multi-cultural experience with artist studios, design centers, unusual eateries, cafes and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.  After an hour or so viewing mind-expanding modern art at the MOMA, you can walk across the street to the Yerba Buena Gardens.  Waterfalls and fountains await you and it is a wonderful spot for a picnic lunch or an iced-Latte.  The Yerba Buena Center of the Arts includes a wide range of cultural events.  From May through October you can enjoy free concerts, dance performances, comedies and puppet shows.  As you continue your stroll through the gardens you will find the ¡°Zeum¡± for young minds, the Metreon for shopping, dining or more enchanting performances and a roof-top garden with a beautiful 1906 carousel.  Rides cost $2.00 and, with the lovely hand-carved horses, it is a pleasant experience for any age.

If you are a walker, continue on your stroll to 5th Street and Brannan where you will find the San Francisco Flower Mart.  The flower barns are truly a feasting of the senses.  The market is open to the public from 10-2 and is a floral delight.  If you can sneak a walk-through around 6 am you will experience the thrill and bustle of the world of Retail Florists.  Step into the breakfast nook for a cup of Java while listening to the gossip of the trade. 

When you are ready for a rest, board the #7 Haight bus and tour with your feet up.  The Haight bus will take you past the Castro, and Fillmore districts, beyond Haight-Asbury and out to Golden Gate Park.  This huge park is home to a variety of specialty gardens, the Arboretum, the DeYoung Museum and much, much more.  There are many concerts and performances that take place in the park.  In October you can enjoy a free Opera performance, the Strictly Blue Grass Festival, or a variety of fee-charging events.  There is a free park shuttle that will take you throughout the park and all the way toward Ocean Beach.

Surrounding Golden Gate Park are the Richmond and Sunset districts.  An active market area is on Irving between 8th and 10th and an Asian flavored market area beyond Irving and 20th.  Shop among the SF locals and find much better values than in the usual tourist destinations.  October is the month of the annual ¡°Sunset District Fair¡± and allows a unique close up to the peoples and cultures of one district.  There are other district fairs throughout the year in every district of the city.
