The situation is rare, but nonetheless valid: you live in San Francisco but seek to escape the city limits for a single day. Sometimes, despite all the ambience and character and traditional urban flavor that San Francisco has to offer, you find that you¡¯re desperately lacking in variety. Fortunately, the area surrounding San Francisco offers variety in abundance, catering to the scholarly, the adventurer, and even the wine connoisseur.
For the culture-seeker, there is the highbrow city of Oakland, California within easy driving distance of San Francisco. Oakland boasts a ¡°taste of Venice¡± with Lake Merritt, a body of water just to the side of the urban center. Oakland has sought for years to cultivate its European flavor, establishing itself as a city separate from San Francisco in terms of culture, entertainment, and art. Visit Oakland if you lust after the complex and the poignant, because San Francisco rings like the banging of a brass drum in your ear after you¡¯ve experienced the sedated elegance found in Oakland. The city boasts its own Ballet Company, opera, and symphony. The city also offers free walking tours (eight varieties in total) that feature 90-minutes of city-exploration, from landmarks to churches. The tours are sponsored by the Oakland Community and Economic Development Agency, so your guide is almost guaranteed to know a great deal more than her minimum wage, baby-faced counterparts on similar tours. Finally, if you¡¯re stopping through Oakland, the African American Museum at Oakland shouldn¡¯t be missed. It features unique and provocative exhibits year-round.
The environmentalist might prefer something a bit more natural and less urban. For his type, there is more than enough opportunity to explore the landscape of San Francisco Bay and the surrounding region. The Bay Area (as this region of California is known), in fact, contains far more than its fair share of nature preserves and parks. Due to a recent initiative, called ¡°Adventures in Learning,¡± the parks seemed especially geared towards the education of youth and children. The movement accommodates also imaginative, knowledge-thirsty adults. Two parks in particular that stand out as being slightly ¡°out of the ordinary¡± are Angel Island (a former Civil War camp only a ferry¡¯s ride away from San Francisco) and A¨°o Nuevo, a gathering place for northern elephant seals. (The latter, it should be noted, is accessible only by guided tour during the winter months).
Finally, the southern region of California is particularly renowned for its vineyards. If it¡¯s an ¡°escape¡± that you seek, perhaps an excursion to the nation-famous Napa Valley would be in order, particularly considering the developments the region has made in the last few years to draw in tourists. The Valley itself has, in fact, become a frenzy of activity. The companies operating in Napa Valley that appeal to tourists are no longer restricted to those just involved with wine production. In fact, there is a profitable hot air balloon business that has made its home in Napa Valley, culminating in a champagne brunch celebration. For those more serious about wine and wine tasting, however, there is an abundance of wineries open to tourists for this very purpose, the most famous of which might be the Pine Ridge Winery (recently recommended in the Wall street Journal). You can expect the admission ticket for a winery like Pine Ridge to be anywhere from $5-$30, including (of course) a little wine tasting at the conclusion.
So, regardless of your personality type or preferences, the area surrounding San Francisco can prove just as fruitful to tourist exploration as the city itself. |
