Northern California is rich in cultural history, but San Francisco stands out as one of the premier spots of historical sites and museums commemorating historical.

First on the agenda is Alcatraz Island.  If anyone has seen the movie ¡°The Rock¡± with Sean Connery, you were immediately intrigued by the island¡¯s history and will be interested in the self-guided tour available.  For a reasonable amount of money you board the Blue and Gold Fleet ferry out to the island and for 2 1/2 hours conduct a self-guided tour, via rented headphones, around the premises.  Alcatraz is home to various American cult classic criminals such as Al Capone and The Birdman.  The guide takes you on a tour of the most famous escape attempts.  Alcatraz Island also offers one of the most spectacular views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge so don¡¯t forget your camera.  

Next on your tour should be the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco which is home to 6,000 years of history from 25 Asian countries.  Devoted exclusively to preserving both the history from abroad, as well as the notorious movement onto the Western coast of the United States, the Asian Art Museum is an all-day affair.  Presenting its viewers with intricate historical, cultural and artistic information, one cannot help but be in awe of the color, intricacy and textures of Asian life.

The Exploratorium makes its home in the Palace of Fine Arts and is home to San Francisco¡¯s largest collection of science, art and human perception exhibits.  The Exploratorium was founded in 1969 and remains one of the nation¡¯s most devoted proponents of education through hands-on learning via museums.  It strives to provide access to science, nature, art and technology to everyone who enters and has, at any one time, over 600 interactive installations which are fun for a variety of ages.  The Exploratorium promotes gender equity in the sciences and donates scholarships annually to students interested in pursuing science and technology-based educations.  

Finally after spending so much time inside air-conditioned museums it¡¯s time to get outside!  The Golden Gate National Recreation Area includes Marin Headlands, Muir Woods, Fort Point National Historic Site and the Presidio of San Francisco ¨C all day trips in themselves they capture the natural history California is known for.  The GGNRA is twice the size of San Francisco City proper and includes the spectacular Golden Gate Park within which one can spend days wandering throughout the beautiful flowers, smells, and sounds of several areas, the Chinese Tea Gardens or the Botanical Gardens just to name a few.
