San Diego is such a diverse community; it is only natural that it offers a diverse choice of restaurants. With over 50 different cultural types of food available from Afghan to Vietnamese, you can find almost anything your taste buds desire. There are so many restaurants with such a wide variety of food and prices, it would be impossible to list them all, but here are a few:
Caf¨¦ Japengo
Located in the heart of lovely La Jolla, Caf¨¦ Japengo is a crowd favorite for both its food and atmosphere. You can start your meal with a mouth watering appetizer of crispy japengo duck won tons or coconut bisque lobster. Or maybe sushi ¨C there are over fourteen different varieties to choose from including eel, tuna, crab salmon and more! The dinner menu offers spiced ahi, sake marinated prawns, ten ingredient fried rice and barbecued prime pork. If you still have room, a dessert of honey chai cake is a great way to finish off the perfect meal. Be sure to valet park and dress for success ¨C Caf¨¦ Japengo not only has great food, but is a great place to see and be seen. Dinners can run upwards of $40 each for three courses.
Dave and Busters
Looking for a night of food and fun? Dave and Busters is the place to go! You can start the evening with a delicious meal in their dining area. Choose from an extensive menu that boasts both tasty appetizers (margherita pizza dip, tempura fried mushrooms and grilled chicken nachos) and yummy entrees (huli huli salmon, santa fe chicken, and Jack Daniel¡¯s ribeye steak). Once you finish your dinner, you can work it off in their game room. Purchase a power card (you choose the denomination) and you can play games such as Star Wars Pod Racer, Wheel of Fortune or PGA Golf. If you are good enough, you win tickets which can be redeemed for prizes. After 10:00 pm, the bar in the game room opens and it becomes adults only.
The Cheesecake Factory
The Cheesecake Factory has such a great menu, it¡¯s no wonder the wait can last up to two hours. Appetizers include Roadside Sliders (small, bite sized burgers), fire-roasted fresh artichoke and fried macaroni and cheese. As for entrees, their burgers are all made from Angus beef. There is something for every taste ranging from pasta to steak to seafood. And if you don¡¯t see anything you like on the entr¨¦e menu, just make up for it by ordering several desserts! There is Linda¡¯s fudge cake with layers and layers of chocolate, fresh apple dumplings or, of course, cheesecake. No matter what you choose, you will be please! Entrees run between $7 and $18.
Todai
Right off Interstate 8 is Todai, a Japanese seafood buffet. There are over 50 different hot entrees on their buffet. Items such as snow crab, fried tofu, mahimahi, pork spare ribs and jumbo shrimp are among the crowd favorites. There are over 40 salads to choose from including marinated salmon, spicy scallop, bean sprout, kimchee and tuna tataki. If you have room, you might choose pina colada with tofu, blueberry cake or mango delight from the over 40 desserts available. Not only will you leave with a full tummy, but a very happy one! The lunch buffet is $12.95 and dinner buffet is $23.95.
Old Town Mexican Caf¨¦
Some of the best Mexican food in San Diego can be found in Old Town at the Old Town Mexican Caf¨¦. It has been around for over twenty five years and is famous for its authentic Mexican food. So much so, that it has won the San Diego Union Tribune award for best Mexican restaurant three times. You can start with a fajita quesadilla, bean dip or nachos or if you can¡¯t decide, just get the special sampler with a little of everything. Among the house specialties are the Old Town Famous carnitas, carne asada, chicken breast with tomatillo sauce and the enchilada rancheras. Prices are reasonable with dinners running between $8.00 and $15.00 or $20.00 for two in some cases.
Croce¡¯s Restaurant
Located in downtown San Diego in the Gaslamp Quarter, you can enjoy great jazz music while dining on a wonderful meal at Croce¡¯s Restaurant. Try the Mediterranean hummus with roasted red peppers, garlic flat bread, cucumbers and Greek olives for an appetizer. Or, you might want to try the Szechwan yellow fin tuna sashimi or spicy firecracker shrimp. As an entr¨¦e, you can choose among grilled range-free chicken, rack of lamb, filet mignon, roasted duck, salmon, New Zealand sea bass, swordfish or halibut. Afterwards you can enjoy desserts such as Mexican Kalhua chocolate bread pudding, Grand Marnier Cr¨¨me Brulee or chocolate flourless cake while you enjoy jazz from San Diego favorites like the Dave Scott Quintet and Shep Meyers.
The Poseidon Restaurant
San Diego is known for its scrumptious seafood and the Poseidon Restaurant offers some of the best. Enjoy a warm bowl of clam chowder or sesame seared ahi while sitting on the patio overlooking the beach and Pacific Ocean. The grilled Maine lobster is served with Asian vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes while the oven-roasted halibut comes with saut¨¦ed spinach, garlic mashed potatoes and red pepper coulis. If you stop by for lunch, be sure to order their fish tacos. They are beer and herb tempura fried in corn tortillas with cabbage, salsa and chipotle sauce served with fries. Lunch will run you around $10 while the dinner menu averages $25 per meal.
Caf¨¦ Socrates
Are you in the mood for some tasty Mediterranean food? Look not further than Caf¨¦ Socrates in Escondido. You¡¯ll find the menu not only appetizing, but healthy as well. The vegetarian falafel consists of pita bread stuffed with a fried garbanzo bean patty, lettuce, tomato, and tahini sauce. The chicken gyro is served on pita bread with lettuce, tomato, and potato garlic sauce. Dinner plates are all served with rice, salad, bread and sauce. You can choose from marinated chicken, beef kabob, shrimp kabob or a combination of chicken and beef kabob. Their Greek salad with lettuce, tomato, Greek olives, feta cheese, cucumber and onion will definitely wake up your taste buds! Plate are very reasonably priced beginning at $5.89.
Donovan¡¯s Steak and Chop House
Donovan¡¯s is practically a shrine in San Diego. They were ranking number one in the Prime Time Top 10 of American steak houses. The steaks are mouthwatering. You can choose from 100% USDA prime filet mignon, peppercorn filet, porterhouse, t-bone, ribeye and New York strip. Each is served with your choice of potato (mashed, baked or fried), a fresh vegetable and warm fresh bread. You can also choose from other classics like pork chops, veal chops, rack of lamb or lobster. Be sure to check out their wine menu that offers over six hundred different brands from which to choose. Dinners run upwards of $40.
As you can see, San Diego has a wide variety of restaurants that are sure to please even the pickiest eater. If you visit San Diego, look around, take your time and enjoy the great restaurants they have to offer.
