The state of Texas is often correlated with 10-gallon hats and rodeos.  Needless to say, forms of entertainment extend far beyond spurs and saddles in the humbled Lone Star State.  From city to city, the nightlife in Texas¡¯s major metropolitan areas offers a wide array of clubs, bars and restaurants.  

Furthest to the south is San Antonio, one of the biggest tourist hot spots in Texas.  Home to the historic Alamo and the San Antonio Spurs, the city is probably one of the best places to grab some great Tex-Mex cuisine and enjoy a night on the town all at the same time.  Serving as the epicenter of the city¡¯s nightlife is the famed Riverwalk.  You can take a Riverbarge ride throughout the district and view all the restaurants, shops and attractions that line the river.  At night, the Riverwalk turns into a veritable fiesta as lights hang from the trees and compliment the fun and excitement it has to offer.  For starters, you can stop by the unconventional bar and restaurant, Dick¡¯s Last Resort.  The unique hot spot offers great food and beer, but they are known for their blunt and unusual service, which provides a fun experience.  If you meander more throughout the jungle of bars and eateries, you will find Swig, an upscale martini bar with it¡¯s own humidor.  Here, you can find a great selection of tasty martinis and even choose a quality cigar to compliment your drink.  Also on the river is Mad Dog¡¯s British Pub, which was supposedly started in Hong Kong by two Scotsmen.  Adhering to the ambiance of an authentic pub, you can have a good beer and some bar food.  For an even wider beer selection, head to Northeast San Antonio to The Flying Saucer where they have an inevitable wall of beer taps that provide everything from quenching ciders to the richest, darkest beers. For dancing, the Bonham Exchange stands out as one of the top clubs in San Antonio.  Located downtown, the popular nightclub has great music that caters to its three dance floors and five bars.

In Dallas, nightlife bursts at the seams in its various districts.  One notable area is Deep Ellum, located in the warehouse district.  Before heading out for music and dancing, stop by Sol¡¯s Taco Lounge for a top shelf award winning margarita and some great Mexican food.  Afterwards, head on over to the Gypsy Tea Room, a top-notch live music venue and bar that has been host of diverse music acts such as Interpol, Earl Haven Trio and Erykah Badu.  For more of Miss Badu and Dallas nightlife, you can venture to Badu¡¯s South Dallas club, Black Forest Theater.  Bursting with cultural nuances and stylish d¨¦cor, the renovated theater turned club serves as another music venue for R&B, hip-hop and rock.  For a more relaxed and unassuming night, visit Down Bar and Lounge.  As a bar that lives up to its name, you can enjoy a drink in a laid back atmosphere that doesn¡¯t contain all the ruckus of an average bar.  If you want some livelier and you¡¯re a beer lover, you will find it worth your time if you pay a visit to Stan¡¯s Blue Note.  Characterized by beers served in Mason jars, the popular bar contains over 50 varieties of beer and cider.   Dance the night away at some of Dallas¡¯s hottest clubs such as Lizard Lounge, which has played host to some of the country¡¯s best DJ¡¯s.  Purgatory, a three-tiered club that that cleverly plays with the concept of heaven and hell through its d¨¦cor and unique events.  Complete with quality drinks and modern sound systems, the high-energy nightclub is one of the best spots for dance.

Not to be left out, the city of Houston offers more than its share of nighttime fun.  With a balcony overlooking downtown, Mantra serves as a posh setting via two levels.  Whether you are sipping drinks in its Moroccan-inspired lounge area or dancing in the more contemporary upstairs setting, Mantra is a great place to be seen.  Another great setting for the city¡¯s elite is M Bar.  As a place where many celebrities have been spotted, the stylish club provides equally chic drinks and house thumping music to dance to.  Laced with Russian themes, the club Redstar adds to the never-ending list of veritable forms of Houston nightlife.  As images of Sputnik and Russia¡¯s hammer and sickle adorn the red walls of the club, fashionable professionals dance to a diverse selection of music while sipping on drinks from a full bar.  For the wine connoisseur, you can enjoy a more sociable, yet quiet evening at The Tasting Room, a wine bar that is stocked with an enormous amount of fine wines.  Keeping with the elegant theme of chardonnays and pinot noirs, the bar is furnished with plush chairs, wooden tables and a small patio with a scenic garden so that you can enjoy the art of wine tasting.  On the extreme flipside, you can find many sports bars and restaurants in the Houston Rocket-loving city.  In Rice Village next to the university of the same name, you can enjoy good beer and food while watching the latest game at Two Rows, a bar and grill that offers All-American food and great drinks.  Also located in Rice Village is Buffalo Wild Wings, an even more sport-friendly bar that serves an assortment of wings and beer.

Last and certainly not least is the capital city, Austin.  Located in the heart of Texas, Austin provides some of the best nightlife in the entire state.  The most prominent venue of the characteristic city is the famous 6th Street.  Almost every night, the street serves as the number one place to be in the city as a mixture of college co-eds, tourists and young professionals swarm to the numerous bars and clubs.  The suitably named Bar Austin is just one of many places that provide a night of drinks and dancing.  Set to the backdrop of two dance floors, two bars and DJ¡¯s playing the latest house, techno and hip-hop music, Bar Austin is a prime venue for urban hipsters.  Further down the road and past other nightlife options, is Spill, an elite club with vibrant music and cocktails that include a large martini menu.  If you travel a couple of streets over to the warehouse district you will find even more club options such as Cuba Libre.  During the day, it¡¯s a great place to enjoy a happy hour and delicious tapas.  At night, you can walk through the curtains into a candle-lit Cuban inspired party scene complete with eclectic music and friendly bartenders.  Across the street you can hop into Vicci, an original club of luxury.  This two-story club is set to the tune of Vegas and has hints of Italy that emulate with sophistication.  If you aren¡¯t in the mood for barhopping and club mingling, Austin extends its nightlife wings by means of the Alamo Drafthouse.  Visit one of the four locations to enjoy the latest films while eating a gourmet meal.  In any case, you can always end the night at one of many 24-hour diners sprinkled throughout the city such as Kerbey Lane or Magnolia Caf¨¦.

The huge chunk of America that is Texas contains an indefinite number of outlets for nightlife.  Even in the smallest towns, you will find some sort of club or bar that is nothing short of fun.  In any matter, the primary metropolitan areas have an endless list of clubs, bars, restaurants and other forms of recreation that bring new meaning to ¡°painting the town red¡±.
