If you are planning a romantic getaway or honeymoon, Utah¡¯s diverse landscapes and activities have something to offer every couple. Each season offers unique getaway opportunities.
Winter
If you and your honey are the adventurous type, Utah¡¯s winters mean skiing. Utah¡¯s resorts and snow are top-notch. Park City, just 30 minutes away from Salt Lake City, is a great location to combine great skiing with a romantic getaway. This charming resort town offers classy accommodations, dining, and shopping. Try a cozy bed and breakfast like the Washington School Inn or opt for the luxurious Summit Marriott. Spend the morning skiing and the afternoon at one of the many day spas in Park City.
Winter is a beautiful time to be in Salt Lake City. Utah¡¯s famous (but occasionally elusive) snow makes everything lovely. The city¡¯s famed Temple Square is aglow with Christmas lights and the well known Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings at many Christmas concerts. You can take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage around the Temple Square and downtown area any time of year, but snuggling under blankets as you take in the winter sights is especially romantic. Ballet West performs the Nutcracker yearly, and the Utah Symphony Orchestra and other performance groups offer many Christmas concerts. Salt Lake City can also make a great base camp for skiing trips so you can sample all the nearby resorts, like Alta, Snowbird, and Brighton. You can also catch a Utah Jazz game if you are basketball fans.
Spring
St. George is an ideal stop in the spring: you can avoid the hot summer weather, and instead enjoy its spring weather, which is more predictably good than the rest of Utah. It is also a perfect winter stops if you want to avoid the Utah snow. Snow Canyon State Park (which doesn¡¯t receive snow) near St. George has gorgeous hiking and biking trails that wind through the red rock canyon. St. George is close enough to Las Vegas that you can spend a day or two in Vegas and then return to a calmer and quieter retreat in St. George. St. George boasts fantastic golf courses and spas. In many months of the year there are plays in the stunning outdoor amphitheater in Snow Canyon, Tuacahn. The deserts that surround St. George are perfect for stargazing.
If the weather permits, Zion National Park can be a stunning spring stop. Close to St. George, Zion is Utah¡¯s oldest national park. It has hikes for everyone, from the beginner to the die-hard adventurer. Summer is the most common time to visit Zion, but fall is probably the best time to visit: the weather is usually mild and there isn¡¯t the flash flood danger that can affect some of the more challenging hikes in slot canyons in the summer.
Summer
If the two of you want to escape the heat of summer, think of the ski resorts. There won¡¯t be snow, but the high elevations offer relief from the sizzling heat. The resorts that are so bustling in the winter offer a calmer pace than many of the tourist-laden stops elsewhere. The Brian Head resort area, for example, often offers great summer packages because of the lull in visitors. Where there is good skiing in the winter often means great hiking and biking in the summer, so be sure pick up a local trail map. Brian Head is close to Cedar Breaks National Monument and Bryce Canyon National Park, both which are not to be missed and have great hiking opportunities.
Brian Head is close to another of Utah¡¯s tourist treasures, the Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City. The festival has won a Tony award for best regional theater, and its productions are excellent. Along with plays, there is a medieval feast and green show worth seeing. The festival goes through the summer and offers a few plays in the fall.
Fall
Early fall is a great time for adventure in Moab, which offers close proximity to two of Utah¡¯s National Parks: Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. You can bike on trails to match your ability: for beginners, try the paved or flat trails, and for the more adventurous, there is Moab¡¯s famous Slickrock. Jeep rides are available for the adventurous, but sedentary. Hiking is great in Arches National Park; don¡¯t miss Delicate Arch, which is featured on many Utah posters and pictures.
Whatever season you choose, Utah has something for every couple. |
