Kansas City may not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a romantic getaway, but it should be! There are many opportunities for romance in the City, and plenty of fun things to do while you¡¯re here.

Bed and Breakfast

When planning a romantic weekend, why not stay in one of the locally-owned Bed and Breakfasts instead of a chain hotel? Bed and Breakfast Inns are more intimate than hotels, and usually include a hot tub for communal use. Some even offer in-room hot tubs or special romance packages. Check the Bed and Breakfast Inns Online website for a listing of Bed and Breakfasts in Kansas City.

Dining Out

No romantic getaway is complete without a romantic dinner. The Peppercorn Duck Club and the Raphael Restaurant are both known for their romance, fantastic food, and high-class service. Skies, which offers a streamlined modern menu, offers diners unparalleled views of Kansas City from its revolving restaurant on the 40th floor of the Hyatt Regency Crown Center. The city offers many other fine dining opportunities, as well. Ask your Innkeeper or Concierge for recommendations.

Don¡¯t go for candles and chamber music? For a real Kansas City experience, head to one of the city¡¯s many renowned Bar-B-Que eateries. Kansas City is known for its Bar-B-Que. K.C. Masterpiece, home of the widely available K.C. Masterpiece Sauce, is a popular choice. Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue is another well-known Bar-B-Que restaurant. The city is filled with smaller neighborhood eateries, as well, so ask your Innkeeper or Concierge about what¡¯s available in the local area.

Fountains

What¡¯s more romantic than a fountain? Kansas City has become known as the City of Fountains. What started as a series of drinking troughs for animals has become a large collection of beautiful fountains scattered throughout the city. A tour of the city¡¯s fountains should start at Country Club Plaza to see the Neptune Fountain, Mermaid Fountain, Bacchus Fountain, and several others. The fountain at Crown Center, Hallmark¡¯s large town center, is also quite impressive and worth a stop.

Carriage Ride

While you¡¯re downtown, consider hiring a carriage for a romantic tour of the area. At least two carriage companies operate downtown - Pride of KC Carriages and Surreys On The Plaza - call ahead for reservations or more information.

Jazz

After your romantic dinner, cap off the evening with drinks at one of the city¡¯s many Jazz clubs. Kansas City is one of the hot spots of American Jazz music, and attracts many national names. Even better, check out some of the local acts that perform at the city¡¯s bars, clubs, and lounges.

While you¡¯re in town, consider a stop at the American Jazz Museum, an interactive museum that tells the story of jazz music and musicians. More than just exhibits, this museum also features showings of original films, audio listening stations, an interactive recording studio, a large jazz music collection, and even a live jazz club. 

Gambling

If you¡¯re the gambling type, plan to spend time at Kansas City¡¯s riverboat casinos. The riverboats no longer cruise the Missouri River, but maintain cruise schedules, so check the rules in advance by calling the riverboat of your choice. Some riverboats offer gambling lessons for those who aren¡¯t certain of their gambling talents! All boats are open every day, and admission is free.

Kansas City Zoo

Want to take a casual stroll, hand-in-hand, while you gaze at exotic animals? Head over to the Kansas City Zoo. The zoo has hundreds of animals to study, including elephants, kangaroos, lions, and giraffes. You can take in an animal show or recapture your childhood by visiting the petting zoo. The Zoo is open year-round, but closed on some holidays.
