Often eclipsed by her trendy sister cities Taos and Santa Fe, most tourists consider Albuquerque a quick stop on the way to those more popular destinations. But for those who have gotten off the highway and actually peered beyond the kitsch of Route 66, Albuquerque offers one delight after another. With its relaxed, welcoming, multicultural community, its diverse natural beauty, it isn¡¯t long before a couple finds themselves entranced, in what is called, after all, the land of enchantment.
While Albuquerque is enjoyable in winter, the best time for romance is early spring to late fall. The light desert air, fragrant with juniper, sagebrush, and pinion, settles into cool night, and the dark sky swings into its seasonal constellations, the sky huge, the stars close. Such nights are especially fine in one of the many Bed and Breakfasts which offer traditional Spanish courtyards or private nature trails in and about the ¡°Bosque¡±, or woodlands close to the Rio Grande. There are many B&Bs styled in traditional Pueblo, Mission, or Territorial architecture. Hacienda Antigua is an extant 200 year old ranchita, offering a courtyard with a fountain outside, and a kiva, or fireplace, within. This, and other recommended lodgings, can be easily researched online, though the Albuquerque Convention and Visitor¡¯s Bureau is perhaps the surest place to start.
However long your stay there are several interesting ways to immerse yourselves in the romantic allure of this city and its surrounding environs. The first is an exploration of Albuquerque¡¯s ¡°Old Town¡±, where some of the original adobe architecture has been preserved around the plaza of San Felipe De Neri Church, originally erected in 1706. Throughout the plaza are open air markets, with handcrafted wares set upon blankets in front of restaurants and shops. Art galleries display exquisite Pueblo Indian pottery, authenticated and well-priced. While in Old Town, be prepared to eat: the best places are casual, with local fare, like Casa de Ruiz or Little Anita¡¯s. Beyond testing your endurance for Albuquerque¡¯s famous hot chili peppers, sample other ethnic flavors, such as sopaipillas with dribbled honey, huevos rancheros, and Navajo fry bread. Any city guide can lead you to fine dining, but for true romance, nothing is as good as walking hand in hand, stopping at sidewalk restaurants, and contemplating posted menus.
For a bit of the bohemian life, take a ride or walk down Route 66, past tattoo parlors, used book stores, and retro 50s chic: renovated or preserved motels, shops, and gas stations. This part of town is near the university and it pulses with funk and energy. A stop at the 66 Diner will take you back to the days of booby socks and duckbill hairdos. Its fabulous jukebox, burgers, and ultra thick shakes will bring out the teenager in any couple!
Any romantic trip to Albuquerque must include an exploration of its stunning natural environment. Most dramatic is the Sandia Peak Tramway, which ascends, in 18 minutes, to Sandia Peak, elevation 10,378 feet. The tram is spectacular at sunset when the mountain changes to a vibrant rose and the lights of Albuquerque checker the darkening city. But Sandia Peak is also special to explore by day, as the area hosts trails where hikers can examine the wide variety of trees and wildflowers only viable that high above the desert. In contrast, the Rio Grande River Valley below is a verdant strip of willows, cottonwood trees, and marsh. The best places to explore the Rio Grande are at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden downtown, and again, further uptown, at Rio Grand Nature Center. Both areas include slow, wending walks, and observatory features.
For mystery, stop at Petroglyph National Monument. Carved into the black volcanic rock along West Mesa are thousands of primitive images. Some are clearly recognizable, such as human figures and animals, while others are abstract and symbolic, a language, perhaps, of a people from 10,000 years ago.
Every couple should venture into some of the cultural venues the city has to offer, be it a study of the many Native American tribes contributing to Albuquerque¡¯s tradition and environment, or a perspective of the ancient Catholic Spanish missions which so affected the birth of this city. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center offers a glimpse into the sacred life of the differing Pueblo Indians. And a drive to any of the Salinas Pueblo Mission Monument sites will reveal the grave influence of the Spanish Conquistadors and the priests who followed them.
Albuquerque has a way of drawing people together¡and of drawing people back. It is this quality above all others which makes Albuquerque the perfect place for a couple to discover each other, a romantic place which defies clich¨¦: a true place to share mind, spirit, and heart. |
