With its breathtaking views of the ocean and its stunning sunsets, not to mention the mild tropical-like weather, San Diego is a great place to visit for a romantic getaway. So, pack your shorts, flip-flops and sunscreen and enjoy any of the following romantic days with your significant other.
Coronado Island, which actually a peninsula connected to San Diego, is one of the most expensive places to live in the nation. It is also brimming with beautiful sandy beaches, trendy shops and restaurants. Start your day with Sunday Brunch at the Hotel Del Coronado. The ¡°Hotel Del¡± as locals refer to it, is the oldest Pacific Coast resort from Alaska to Acapulco. It is also one of San Diego¡¯s most famous landmarks. Sunday Brunch is served in the Crown Room. You will feel like royalty in the majestic setting. The brunch is extravagant, with long tables of all types of food and decadent desserts. Harp music adds a touch of romance. Nearby is a place to rent a boat or canoe and enjoy the beautiful views from the bay. What could be more romantic? Then, spend a few hours exploring Orange Street. It is the main street and it is filled with eclectic shops, restaurants and bars. With its beautiful views of the ocean, it is a great place to end the night with a light dinner and cocktail.
Pacific Beach, known to locals, as ¡°PB¡± is a beautiful beach about 15 miles north of downtown San Diego. On the weekends it is full of families, surfers and sunbathers. Several local shops rent bicycles and roller blades, which is a great way to see the area. There is a boardwalk that stretches for miles, it is lined by shops, cafes and million dollar homes. Bicycle or roller blade up and down the boardwalk, there is plenty to see and you will get some great exercise. Once you are done, stop by one of the many great restaurants for dinner. There is Joe¡¯s Crab Shake located right on the boardwalk, which is great for an authentic seafood meal. Gringo¡¯s is an excellent Mexican restaurant right near the beach that has an outdoor patio with fire pits and great margaritas. Very romantic! Or try the Green Flash, located right on the boardwalk. This restaurant got its name from the split-second flash some people have supposedly seen at the moment of sunset. You can dine on salads, fish and pasta while enjoying a great view of the ocean. Finfish the night with a romantic stroll on the sandy beach as the sun sets.
One thing there is no shortage of in San Diego is day spas. Locals and visitors like to feel pampered, and it is a great way to spend the day with your significant other. Two of the most famous spas are located in Carlsbad, 30 miles north of downtown San Diego. The La Costa Resort and Spa hosts numerous professional golf and tennis tournaments. The luxuriously landscaped grounds and newly renovated spa make the resort a very romantic place to spend the day. It also offers seven restaurants sure to satisfy any craving after your spa treatments. A little further up the road and even more luxurious is the Four Seasons Resort. The resort has a full spa with every exotic treatment you could want. The lobby is a great place to enjoy one of their signature cocktails, with a stunning view of the ocean. From there, drive along the Pacific Coast Highway; it is a great route to take downtown and much more romantic than the over-crowded freeway.
A great nighttime activity is visiting the Gaslamp district of town. It is the city¡¯s most popular dining, shopping and entertainment spot. Hip, trendy and jam-packed on weekend nights, the Gaslamp is a great area for a couples that enjoys nice restaurants, pubs and club hopping. The Beach Bar at the W Hotel is a romantic and fun place to visit. On the roof of their restaurant is the bar, complete with heated sand, fire pits and a view of the city. There are also many annual events held in the neighborhood including, parades, music festivals and a Mardi Gras celebration.
