Maine is one of the most beautiful areas of the United States, and Bar Harbor epitomizes everything the state has to offer.  Bar Harbor rests on the east side of Mount Desert Island and is the middle of Arcadia National Park.  Many people visiting Maine stay in Bar Harbor and travel to other towns and cities, returning to their comfortable accommodations at night.  However, it is such a romantic place, many people find it has everything to offer within its boundaries.

You can sit on a park bench overlooking the ocean, hike trails up a mountain and sit out over and expanse of open air scenery.  You can cruise out into the Atlantic Ocean or pack a picnic lunch and eat by a picturesque bay.  You can visit museums or explore lighthouses, and you can munch on a lobster at a roadside eatery or enjoy a lavish meal at a five-star restaurant.  Everything is within a few miles, and not only will you leave with beautiful photographs, but with picturesque memories forever in your mind.

Downtown Bar Harbor offers quaint and lavish gift shops where you can buy inexpensive souvenirs or take home something to last a lifetime.  In the shopping area are numerous restaurants which offer lavish meals of steak and seafood.  The sky's the limit.  If you prefer a secluded area, take a drive and find some side roads leading to the ocean.  You can pull off at a lobster pound and munch on lobster and corn on the cob with your fingers.

Arcadia National Park is one of Maine's major attractions, with Mount Desert Island offering a breathtaking mountain-top view of the landscape.  You can drive or hike to the top, and when you reach it you'll gasp at the view.  Sometimes, the clouds will be below you, and you'll marvel at how high up you really are.  There are many rock formations which daring couples climb out on and sit, staring out over an open abyss that makes the squeamish even more scared just to watch them. 

In addition to hiking, there are bike trails and secluded nature trails that couples can walk at their leisure, holding hands and enjoying nature while enjoying each other.  At the base of the mountain couples can swim, rent a sailboat or go kayaking.

If it's raining, you could spend the afternoon in a major hotel or a quaint bed-and-breakfast, or you can visit Abbe Museum on Mount Desert Street.  Unlike other museums such as the Oceanarium and a lobster hatchery, which are fish- and ocean-oriented, this museum devotes itself entirely to Maine's Native Americans, their history and culture, and displays thousands of artifacts.  Visitors are amazed to think of how the Native Americans set up communities along the banks and cliffs of ancient Maine.

For a lighter adventure, visitors can also tour an old brewery from the 1800's, which offers free beer tastings, a gift shop and an open-air restaurant.

And couples can tour Egg rock lighthouse, imagining the sailors on the ocean looking for its signal before pulling into port and back to their warm homes.

From May to November, there's a chance you could spot a large cruise ship docked in the harbor.  The ships pull in, weather permitting, and allow their guests to depart so they can shop and browse in Bar Harbor.  The ships range in length from 165 feet to over 900 feet, and are an impressive sight to see and make a great photo opportunity.

Although summer is the most popular time to visit, many people flock to the area in autumn to enjoy the brilliant colors of fall foliage and get a jump on Christmas gift purchasing.  Odd and unusual gifts, from sea shells to lobster cages, are available in many shops and stores.
