The beautiful city of Hilo is located on the east coast of the Big Island in Hawaii. Although it is Hawaii¡¯s second largest city, Hilo has escaped the tourist trap feeling that many larger cities have fallen prey to.  Instead, Hilo has miraculously remained an island paradise that relatively few people are familiar with, but those who have experienced its breathtaking beauty will never forget it. Hilo is the perfect romantic getaway destination.

Because Hilo is surrounded by a tropical rainforest it receives an abundance of rainfall every year. The rain won¡¯t stop you from experiencing all Hilo has to offer, however. Natives are accustomed to and welcome the warm rain which makes the green surroundings even lusher, if possible. When it does rain, grab an umbrella and head for the streets. All around you will be beautifully colored umbrellas covering fellow tourists and natives both as they enjoy the warmth and renewal that the rain brings. It truly is a sight to see. 

Tropical mountains form the backdrop for this charming city, known as the Gateway to Volcano National Park. There are many spectacular waterfalls that you can easily find. The most popular of these is Rainbow Falls, just a short distance from Hilo. You will want to head a little further to see the series of cascading falls called the Boiling Pots. 

You might want to plan on riding the coast line by way of the Pepe¡¯ekeo Scenic Drive. Other waterfalls along the way include Akaka Falls and Umauma Waterfalls and Gardens. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is near Hilo and well worth the time. You will have spectacular views of the ocean, and you will see the most exotic collection of orchids. 

During your visit to Hilo, you can step back in time and visualize ¡°Old Hawaii¡±. Hilo is home to Hawaii¡¯s largest section of historic buildings, so grab a walking map and explore Hilo¡¯s history. Be sure and stop in the many unique boutiques and shops along the way. Hilo is blessed with talented artists and craftsmen, and their work is available in many of the town¡¯s shops, along with various other treasures. 

Try to plan your visit so that you are in Hilo on at least a Wednesday or a Saturday. This is when the Hilo Farmers Market is open. You can have your pick of the ripest fruits and vegetables and the freshest flowers. 

There are several parks in and around Hilo that are worth visiting. Coconut Island is intriguing because it is also known as the ¡°healing island¡±, where people go to find cures for their diseases. One of the largest Japanese style gardens in the country is located at Lili¡¯uokalani Park. Mo¡¯oheau Park, Kalakaua Park, and Wailoa State Park are located close to downtown Hilo. All of these parks have plenty of green grass, along with sports fields, and room for entertainment. 

Experience the cultural history of Hilo by visiting the Lyman Museum near the downtown area. The Pacific Tsunami Museum keeps alive the stories of people who have lost their lives in the devastating tsunamis of the past. 

Just outside of Hilo is the only zoo in the country that is set in a tropical rainforest. Pana¡¯ewa Rainforest Zoo focuses on the wildlife and vegetation that exist in the rainforests of today. 

Don¡¯t forget to visit the Volcano National Park. You can see the spectacular Kilauea, the world¡¯s most active volcano, and the impressive Mauna Loa, the world¡¯s largest volcano. You can strike out on your own or sign up for a guide for some of the many hiking trails in the park. 

Last, but definitely not least, don¡¯t forget to try plenty of the savory foods that local Hilo restaurants and cafes have to offer. When you are ready to call it a day, Hilo has beautiful hotels and bed and breakfasts to make your stay as comfortable as possible. For a true vacation paradise, plan a trip to beautiful Hilo.
