Couples who want to experience nature at its finest, without all of the commercialism that goes along with many tourist attractions, will find Cordova, Alaska, is both beautiful and fascinating. Many believe Cordova has the absolute best that Alaska has to offer, with small town charm and breathtaking views of the bay and the mountains¡a true paradise.
Cordova is located at the head of the Orca Inlet, in Prince William Sound. Michael Heney, builder of the Northwestern Railroad, officially named the town of Cordova in 1909, and its Copper River became a major shipping port for copper ore.
Once you arrive in Cordova, settle into one of the beautiful lodges or resorts that the area has to offer and begin planning your day. Whether you are visiting during the brilliant winter season or experiencing the beauty of summer, spring, or fall, Cordova has plenty to offer any nature lover.
Child Glacier and the Million Dollar Bridge can be seen by simply driving along the Copper River Highway. Keep an eye out for lots of wildlife along the way. Tourists often report seeing mountain goats, moose, many types of birds, and probably the most exciting of all, black and brown bears. It is always important to maintain a safe distance from any wildlife you happen across, no matter how friendly these animals might seem, and remember, never feed the animals!
In late January to early February, Cordova¡¯s Iceworm Festival is a favorite, offering the election of an Iceworm king and queen, a dance and parade, an art show filled with native art, and a survival suit race. June through September offers tourists the chance to experience the King Salmon Derby, the Silver Salmon Derby, and the Alaska Longboard Festival at nearby Hinchinbrook Island.
Adventures can take many forms around Cordova. Visitors can go fishing, sea kayaking, float trips and whitewater rafting, and surfing. Although Alaska is well-known for its delicious salmon, anglers can fish for halibut, trout, and cod, among other fish. Sea kayaking gives tourists the opportunity to see eagles, seals, sea otters, sea lions, and even the magnificent Orca whale. Enjoy a leisurely float trip down one of the crystal clear rivers in the Alaskan wilderness or hang on for a wild, whitewater ride with one of Alaska¡¯s experienced whitewater guides.
Believe it or not, surfing and beachcombing is a mere 40 minute boat ride away from Cordova on the northern point of the Pacific Ocean. If you are going to surf, you will need to rent a wet suit or bring your own. You must experience the awe-inspiring view of a glacier while visiting Cordova, and that is easy to do. Cordova offers five glaciers within a short driving distance. Both guided and self-guided tours are available. There are also expedition tours available if you want to experience a glacier up close and personal. As always, you can rent various types of equipment for the expeditions.
The wilderness surrounding Cordova offers hundreds of trails and old logging roads that the serious mountain biker or the casual hiker can enjoy. Mountain biking and hiking are some of the best and most inexpensive ways to view the breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife that Alaska has to offer. If seclusion is what you are craving, then check out the many wilderness camps in the area for backcountry hiking and remote fishing excursions.
At the end of a long, excitement filled day, enjoy a delicious meal at one of the wonderful restaurants in Cordova. You will need to get a good night¡¯s rest because tomorrow holds the promise of more adventure and incredible sights just waiting for you in the midst of beautiful Cordova, Alaska. |
