Nebraska may not be the first destination that comes to mind when planning a romantic vacation or getaway, but this state has plenty to offer any romance-seeking couple.

First, you'll want to find a place to stay, and what better spot for romance than a cozy bed and breakfast inn? Nebraska offers a wide variety of inns, from historic homes furnished with antiques to cabins in the country to contemporary homes with upscale designs. Try looking at the Bed and Breakfast Inns Online website for a list of inns in Nebraska.

If a ranch experience is more your style, you may consider staying at one of Nebraska's Guest Ranches. Many of these ranches are on land that has been passed down from one generation to the next since Nebraska was first settled. Some ranches offer excellent hunting opportunities, if this is your preference. You can also help out with ranch activities such as herding and branding, or you can even opt to simply relax and enjoy the fresh air.

Second, you'll need a romantic spot for dinner. If you're in the Omaha area, the historic Old Market area is home to many fine dining restaurants. While you're downtown, you can take a ride around the area on one of the for-hire horse-drawn carriages. If you're in Lincoln, The Lodge at Wilderness Ridge is considered by many to be one of the city's best places for dinner. Consider asking your concierge or innkeeper about local romantic restaurants, as well.

Third, you'll need some things to see and do. If you're the type who enjoys a leisurely drive along a scenic route, you might be pleasantly surprised to discover that Nebraska offers several scenic byways in all parts of the state. The Lewis and Clark Scenic Byway, which follows the state's border north from Omaha, is a particular favorite. The route winds through the wooded bluffs that overlook the Missouri River. You can often spot plentiful wildlife along this route, including bison.

If you are vacationing in central Nebraska, Rowe Sanctuary is a great stop to include in your romantic trip. Rowe Sanctuary is the home to more than 500,000 sandhill cranes during the early spring migration. The sanctuary offers opportunities for other wildlife viewing, as well, and operates year-round.

If a drive-in theater is your ticket to romance, you're in luck. While fewer than 100 of these theaters remain in the United States, three of them are still operating in Nebraska. The Starlite Drive-in in Neligh, the Sandhills Drive-in in Alliance, and the Kearney Drive-in in Kearney all play movies on their large outdoor screens during the warmer months.

Several wineries operate in Nebraska, as well, and most offer tours and wine tasting, which can make for a perfect romantic activity. Many of the vineyards have limited public hours, though, so call in advance to confirm schedules.

This is, of course, just a small sampling of the romantic activities that are possible in Nebraska. The state also offers train tours (some with dinner aboard the train), zoos, museums, and many Native American spots. Whatever your idea of romance, you can probably find it in Nebraska!
