Road to Hana

The road to Hana is a twisting and turning three-hour journey. While Hana is the destination of this trip, the journey is the real experience. Hana is only 53 miles from Kahului Airport, but it generally makes three hours to make the drive. This is partly due to the more than 600 curves and 54 bridges along the way. The road offers some of the most amazing scenery in the Hawaiian Islands; the lush greenery and abundant waterfalls beg visitors to stop and gaze at them every few miles. 

The early part of the journey takes visitors through the rich farmland of Maui¡¯s Upcountry. Historic churches, stunning eucalyptus stands and freshwater pools and waterfalls dot the landscape throughout the journey. 

Hana itself is a quaint historic village. Consider spending a night in one of the lovely and romantic bed-and-breakfasts Hana offers. 

Sunrise at Haleakala Crater

Haleakala is Maui¡¯s dormant volcano. The views from Haleakala¡¯s 10,023-foot summit are breathtaking at any time of day, but are especially spectacular at sunrise. The crater is located in Haleakala National Park and offers panoramic vistas and stunning natural beauty. Visitors have to head out hours before sunrise to ascend the steep volcano, but it is well worth it. For a thrilling follow-up to the sunrise, arrange for a bike rental and ride down the mountain.  

For those who cannot quite manage the early hour, Haleakala also offers stunning sunset views. And, on nights with a full moon the sun is setting just as the moon is rising; this is a sight not to be missed. 

Whale Watching

If you are visiting Maui in winter, a day spent whale watching is mandatory. Either take one of the chartered whale watch boat rides ¨C the captains are excellent at finding whales ¨C or spend time on the shore with a pair of binoculars. The non-profit Pacific Whale Foundation offers great trips and will offer friendly and free advice on the best shoreline locations for viewing. They even send spotters out to popular viewing sites with binoculars and fact sheets for visitors to borrow.

Whether you are planning a wedding or are already happily married, nothing can bring two people closer than exchanging vows on the oceanfront in Maui. Virtually every hotel can arrange for a wedding or a ceremony to renew vows that fits any romantic dream. The clean ocean air and fragrant blossoms make an outdoor ceremony in Maui a sensory adventure.

Maui offers some of the best golf courses in the world so if you enjoy swinging some clubs, this is the place to do it. For hikers, there are trails of every difficulty level in myriad national and state parks. Maui also offers every imaginable water sport: windsurfing, sailing, parasailing, snorkeling, swimming, surfing, boogie boarding and scuba diving. Bicycles are readily available for rent and romantic oceanfront paths line the beaches throughout the island. 

Explore the Beaches

It would be difficult to find a bad beach on Maui, but there are some on the Valley Isle that rank in the superb category. While not deserted, the large expanses of sand and transparent water at the beach commonly called Big Beach or Makena beach is pure pleasure. Officially called Oneloa Beach and located in Makena town, Big Beach is wide, beautiful and usually has the best water conditions on the island. For the adventurous and private, the Red Sand Beach in Hana town is difficult to reach, but frequently deserted. Often it is only distantly populated by the faint of heart simply viewing it from the cliffs above.  To commune with turtles in the waters off West Maui, try Olowalu Beach off Highway 30 at Olowalu.
