New Hampshire has many destinations for couples who want to spend a few days, a weekend, or just a single day doing something special. There are attractions that will enhance your romance available in all seasons in New Hampshire, and there are many different types of activities in which to engage, whatever your tastes may be. Here are some of my favorite things to do as a couple in New Hampshire.
In the autumn months, New Hampshire is a beautiful place to be; the leaves are turning brilliant colors, the air is crisp, and it¡¯s wonderful to be outdoors. The fall is a great time to spend time together in outdoor activities such as apple picking, long drives in the country, picnics along a river, or visiting county fairs. Spend an afternoon at an apple orchard picking apples, sampling the cider donuts, and playing hide-and-seek among the trees. Go home and make an apple pie from scratch together, or drink some warm cider in front of the fireplace. Pack a picnic, drive to the country, and look at the beautiful leaves falling down all around you as you spread a blanket on the grass.
There are many county fairs held in New Hampshire during the fall months. Deerfield Fair is east of Concord and runs for a week in late September. Said to be the ¡°oldest family fair in America,¡± Deerfield Fair dates from 1876, and has many things for couples to do. If you and your partner get a thrill out of being frightened, ride one of the exciting rides on the midway. Eat a funnel cake or cotton candy together, watch one of the musical shows or the horse-pulling contest, and look at the many animals, different varieties of produce, and arts and crafts on display. At night, the fair is even more exciting with all the lights blazing, and you can buy a glo-bracelet to wear if you¡¯re scared of the dark corners. A day at the fair can be a romantic adventure for couples who like to be outdoors.
The Flume Gorge is an outdoor attraction that is very romantic. The Flume Gorge is in Franconia Notch State Park and has trails on which you can hike through a beautiful forest, walk along a rushing river with spectacular waterfalls and huge rocks, and cross over a romantic covered bridge that spans the Pemigewasset River. The scenery is breathtaking; the gorge is one of the most beautiful sights anywhere. The park is open from early May through late October; if you go in early May it¡¯s much less crowded and there¡¯s a greater volume of water in the river coming down from the snowmelt in the mountains. There¡¯s a visitor¡¯s center that will tell you about the history of the Flume Gorge; there are many interesting pictures of the visitors who came in the 1800s to see the sights. There¡¯s a restaurant in the visitor¡¯s center, and spots to picnic outdoors. The Flume Gorge is a beautiful place to spend some time together, and you can visit nearby attractions in the state park. The Pemi Trail will take you along the Pemigewasset River, and you will see incredibly beautiful sights such as The Basin, water rushing over unusually smooth rocks, and many waterfalls. Quiet, secluded spots are easy to find along this trail even in the summer season, and sitting for hours just watching the peaceful scenery and listening to the rushing water is an aid to romance.
If going to the beach is more your style, Hampton Beach has many attractions for couples. Although New Hampshire has only 18 miles of coastline, its beaches are beautiful, and Hampton Beach is no exception. There are many different kinds of accommodations available, including hotels and motels, bed-and-breakfasts, cottage rentals, and RV parks and campgrounds. The beach has numerous restaurants serving food for all tastes, pubs and taverns, souvenir shops, and other amusements, and there are frequent concerts at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom. The outdoor Sea Shell Stage has more than 80 free concerts, one each night from Memorial Day until Labor Day, fireworks shows on Wednesday nights and holidays, and there¡¯s a sand sculpting contest in June that will leave you astounded. There are annual festivals at the beach, including the Hobie Cat Regatta and the Seafood Festival. Whether you like to walk the boardwalk, bask in the sun, brave the chilly water, or just sit in a rocking chair on a porch and take in the nice view, Hampton Beach is a great place for a couple to relax and spend some time together during the summer months.
If you¡¯ve ever wondered what it must have been like to live in the past, visit Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth for a look at simpler times. Tour the more than 40 restored shops and homes, and see how things were carried on back in the1600s as you watch costumed actors reenact scenes from daily life. Eat at one of the quaint little restaurants or numerous coffeehouses found in the area, and walk down to the Piscataqua River to see the waterfront district or some tugboats. To have some fun, ask passers-by how to pronounce the name of the river. There¡¯s also the USS Albacore, a submarine, and the Portsmouth Maritime Museum nearby, or you can drive over the bridge to Kittery, Maine if you want to do some outlet shopping.
For a very special time, treat yourself and your honey to a stay at the beautiful Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods. There are actually four places in which you can stay at the resort, including the stunning Mount Washington Hotel, which opened in 1902 and is a National Historic Landmark, The Bretton Arms Country Inn, which is smaller, more casual and less expensive, The Lodge at Bretton Woods, which is ideal if you plan to engage in skiing or other sports, and The Townhomes of Bretton Woods, if you need more space. The main dining room at the Mount Washington Hotel is very elegant, and dressing up for a special dinner would be quite romantic. Special packages are offered that can include golf, massages, carriage or sleigh rides, and skiing. The area surrounding the resort is quite scenic, and hikes or leisurely walks in the White Mountains of New Hampshire could be a way to get closer to your partner. There¡¯s a cog railroad that will take you up to the top of Mount Washington, which is said to have the ¡°world¡¯s worst weather,¡± or you can just stay in the lovely hotel soaking in the Jacuzzi or sitting around the fireplace if it¡¯s cold.
Lake Winnipesaukee is beautiful, and you can drive around and look at the lake if you don¡¯t want to get wet or it¡¯s cold, or swim or boat on the lake if you¡¯re more adventurous. Weirs Beach has many shops and restaurants besides a beach, and you can get a good view of the lake there. If you have a Harley, you won¡¯t want to miss the annual Laconia Bike Week and all of the associated events that are held at the lake in June. Hundreds of thousands of motorcycle lovers attend, so finding romance should be no problem during the bike week. Movie lovers should find the sign at Squam Lakes that shows where ¡°On Golden Pond¡± was filmed. You can also take a 2 ? hour cruise on the ¡°M/S Mount Washington,¡± a boat that departs from Weirs Beach twice a day and has a narrated tour of the lake; this cruise is especially beautiful during the fall foliage season.
New Hampshire has many small towns that provide lots of charm for couples who want to find romance. There are bed-and-breakfasts in beautiful surroundings that will pamper you as you relax with your partner, or rustic cabins in the woods or on the lakes if you want a more secluded location. Have fun seeking out interesting local restaurants, unusual shops, or exciting activities as you travel, and you will surely find some romantic spots in New Hampshire. |
