Delaware is a state of contrasts. From the busyness of the northeastern part of the state that includes the city of Wilmington to the slower, lower parts of southern Delaware, where the beach points are---there are plenty of romantic destinations to visit in this small state.
So, what are some of the romantic destinations in Delaware? Well, that depends on what your definition of romance is---and Delaware fits the bill with many contrasting destinations.
1. Wilmington, Delaware: This city is very close to Philadelphia and is part of the northeastern corridor of cityscapes. It¡¯s host to a bustling city life where there are nice restaurants, jewelers, florists, and hotels to fit the city person¡¯s idea of romance.
2. Newark, Delaware: is in the northwestern tier of the state---close to the borders of Maryland and Pennsylvania. This quaint city is nearby to parks, restaurants, and dinner theaters. If college towns are your idea of a romantic getaway, Newark is also home to the University of Delaware.
3. Arden, Delaware: A community seeped in art and landscape. A romantic getaway for those interested in community art initiatives, community landscaping, and historic towns.
4. The small communities that dot Route 13 and 113 in Sussex County, Delaware: The oldest routes to the Delaware beaches are Routes 13 and 113. Today, these routes provide a romantic and scenic drive to the beaches as you pass small towns that were incorporated at the turn of the 20th century. These towns include Bridgeville, Dagsboro, Seaford, Georgetown, and Laurel, to name a few.
Many homes in these towns have been renovated to their former Victorian glories and are now bed and breakfasts. Some of the Sussex County hamlets also have fine dining, which makes a romantic getaway all the more special. For instance, in one town you can walk from your bed and breakfast to the main street of the town for a romantic dinner for two at a French restaurant.
5. The beaches of Delaware: The Delaware beaches start at Slaughter Beach, which is a small town along the Delaware Bay and boasts of a lighthouse. Then, as you drive further south on Route 1, you will pass the highway to the romantic town of Lewes which hosts the port for the Lewes-Cape May Ferry, where you can pay to cross the Delaware Bay to the beach town of Cape May, New Jersey.
Further along Route 1, the major highway through Delaware¡¯s beach towns, you¡¯ll encounter the beach towns of Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, South Bethany Beach, and Fenwick Island. All of these beach towns retain their Victorian beauty as well as offering modern day entertainment and luxuries. There are day spas, fancy restaurants, and five-star hotels. And, there are campsites and state parks for those who like a more rugged romantic getaway.
Delaware is a state of contrasts. The northern cities provide the nightlife that city lovers enjoy, such as dancing and dining. And, for those who enjoy hiking in rolling hills, Delaware offers those luxuries near the Pennsylvania and Maryland borders. Heading to slower, lower Delaware, as most Delawarians will call Sussex County, you will come across old towns that are being revitalized into thriving getaways for those who enjoy the beach but would like some quiet in the evenings away from the hubbub of busy beach life. Finally, the state offers eight beach towns to spend the ultimate of romantic stays in luxurious hotels or at rugged campsites. Delaware has it all for all types of romance-seekers! |
