Texas has many romantic destinations for couples who want a special place to spend some time together.  Whether you like city or country, relaxation or adventure, expensive or free, Texas has places you will like.  Here are some of my favorite romantic places in Texas.

San Antonio is a very romantic city located in central Texas; it has the River Walk in the center of town that is lined with cozy little restaurants, luxurious waterfront hotels, and shops with unusual items.  You can take a riverboat ride and the guide will tell you all about the history of the shady San Antonio River; tickets are purchased near the Marriott Rivercenter; you can also book a dinner cruise on the boat.  There are horse-drawn carriages that will take you around the streets of downtown San Antonio, and there¡¯s a beautiful park around the site of the old Hemisfair village from the 1968 World¡¯s Fair; you can go to the top of the Tower of the Americas for a good view of the city.  One of the most romantic hotels on the riverwalk is La Mansion del Rio, whose building dates back to 1852 and has a wonderful courtyard and pool area, and there are many other hotels there that have suites, Jacuzzis, luxury baths and special romance packages.  

Around the River Walk are several old Spanish missions that you may want to tour; among them is the Alamo.  If you like Mexican food, you¡¯re in for a treat, since San Antonio has many restaurants that serve authentic Mexican dishes.  Market Square, or El Mercado, has restaurants, strolling Mariachi bands, and shops selling all kinds of merchandise imported from Mexico.  Mi Tierra Caf¨¦ at Market Square also has a bakery on the side and features many different kinds of Mexican pastries and candies.  Along the 2 ?  miles of the River Walk are many restaurants, serving all different kinds of food, and many have outdoor seating beside the river.  The River Walk is especially beautiful and festive during the Christmas season, when it has over 100,000 lights strung up in the trees along the river.  Strolling arm-in-arm around the River Walk will put you in the mood for romance, and San Antonio has many other attractions you may want to see.

If you love art, head for north Texas to the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  Dallas and Fort Worth both have world-class museums of art, and the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas and Museum of Modern Art of Fort Worth both have new buildings.  The Museum of Modern Art is the second-largest modern art museum in the US, and was designed by architect Tadao Ando.  This museum is especially romantic; the building is exquisite, there¡¯s a 1 ? acre tranquil waterspace that surrounds two sides of the museum, and the Caf¨¦ Modern serves wonderful food.  The museum sponsors dinner-and-music events occasionally.  Be sure to go inside the huge rust-colored sculpture outside the museum; make some noise by singing or shuffling your feet and you will be amazed at what you hear.

The Kimball Art Museum, across the street from the Museum of Modern Art of Fort Worth, has a lovely building designed by architect Louis Kahn, and it houses an impressive permanent collection as well as important traveling exhibitions.  The Kimball has a caf¨¦ and gift shop, and also beautiful water features outdoors.  The museum offers frequent lectures, films, workshops, and music, and festivals are held on the beautiful tree-shaded lawn.  For a romantic afternoon, tour the museums and then spread a blanket on the lawn of the Kimball and enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch.  Another art museum nearby is the Amon Carter, a museum of western art that has many works by Remington and Russell.

Art museums in Dallas include the Dallas Museum of Art, which has a wide collection of many genres, a gift shop, and musical events, the Crow Collection of Asian Art, near the DMA with over 300 pieces of art from the private collection of the Crow family, and the Meadows Museum on the SMU campus, which has a significant collection of 15th-20th century Spanish art.  There are also several smaller art museums and centers in Dallas.

The Nasher Sculpture Center, designed by Renzo Piano and filled inside and outdoors with pieces from Raymond and Patsy Nasher¡¯s private collection of more than 300 sculptures, opened in downtown Dallas in 2003.  Take a romantic walk around the quiet gardens while you view the sculptures by well-known artists such as Picasso, Rodin and Calder, eat lunch in the Caf¨¦ Mansion, which overlooks the gardens, a lily pond and fountain, or browse through the interesting items in the gift shop.  The impressive museum takes up a whole city block, and is located next to the Dallas Museum of Art. 

If you¡¯ve ever wondered what it would be like to take a safari and look at wildlife up close, you might want to stay overnight at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.  Fossil Rim is located in Glen Rose, south of Fort Worth, and the park is hilly, with woods and ponds.  You can drive your car through the 10-mile tour, and you¡¯ll see many different kinds of animals, from zebras and giraffes to deer and rhinos; there are 1,100 animals at the park!   If you purchase a bag of food pellets for the animals, they will come up to your car and eat from your hand.  Just remember not to feed the ostrich or zebra; they bite!  Overnight lodging in the park include The Lodge, which is a bed-and-breakfast, and The Foothills Safari Camp, which has upscale tent cabins.  Both places are in secluded areas of the park where animals come to eat and drink, and you will be able to see them from your patio or veranda.  A flashlight is included with your room so you can see the animals at night. There are different types of tours available at the park; you can help feed the animals, ride a bike through the park, go behind the scenes and see some of the endangered species that the park helps to conserve.  

Also in Glen Rose is the Dinosaur Valley State Park, located on the Paluxy River, a cute old downtown area with artist¡¯s workshops, galleries, shops and restaurants, the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant, which is interesting to see, and the Brazos River, which is popular for tubing in the summer.  There¡¯s a religious pageant performed at an amphitheater from June through November, and bluegrass festivals are held several times a year at Oakdale Park.  There are also several historic buildings to tour, and quite a few bed-and-breakfast establishments overlooking the Brazos River near the old downtown.

Many romances have been kindled at the beach, and South Padre Island offers beautiful white sand and many year-round activities.  Choices for lodging include hotels and motels, condos, bed-and-breakfasts, camping, and beach house rentals.  You can book packages that include golf or fishing, and there are lots of things to do in South Padre, Corpus Christi, and nearby Matamoros, Mexico.  You can ride a jet ski, surf, windsurf, sail, parasail, visit Schlitterbahn, a water park, or just relax on a beach chair.  Golf, tennis, and horseback riding are also available on the island.  During the winter months, there are many events for the ¡°Winter Texans¡± who return to the warm weather, such as the Polar Bear Club¡¯s ¡°New Year¡¯s Day Dip,¡± festivals, walks, and golf tournaments.  If you¡¯re a birdwatcher, the Laguna Madre Nature Trail will take you out in the wetlands, and educational shows featuring endangered sea turtles are held.  You can also take a boat out in the Gulf of Mexico to see dolphins up close.  There are restaurants serving many different types of cuisine, from casual to elegant dining, and there¡¯s lots of shopping available on South Padre Island.  

Texas has many other romantic places you might want to visit.  Houston has major sporting events, an awesome Museum of Fine Arts, and the Water Wall, a very romantic park at the Williams Tower near the Galleria.  Galveston has Moody Gardens, where you could spend a romantic day inside the rain forest, on the beach, or staying in the luxurious hotel there.  There are also historic mansions in Galveston available for tours, and The Strand, a restored neighborhood with many restaurants and shops.  Fort Worth has the romance of the Old West at The Stockyards, Billy Bob¡¯s (a huge honky-tonk), rodeos, brick streets, and barbecue.  Wherever you go in Texas, to towns large or small, you¡¯re sure to find romantic spots.
