Kentucky, the Bluegrass State, is one of America¡¯s forgotten treasures. A couple in search of a scenic, romantic getaway has dozens of breathtakingly beautiful locations to choose from. With one of the largest state-park systems in the country, Kentucky offers a total of 94 state parks in some of the most beautiful locations in the country. Most of the parks offer a variety of lodging options, from luxurious resort hotels to private cabins and, for the more adventurous, rugged campsites. 

And many of these state parks are far more than the typical lake with one beach and some picnic sites. Cumberland Falls State Resort, for instance, is home to a rare and amazing sight. The namesake waterfall, often called the ¡°Niagara of the South¡±, is 125 feet wide and more than 60 feet high, with water cascading down into a boulder-strewn gorge. On a clear night, during a full moon, the waterfall¡¯s mist creates a spectacular ¡°moon bow¡±, a phenomenon so unique it appears nowhere else in the entire Western Hemisphere. 

For those couples that enjoy water sports, Lake Cumberland State Resort offers an unequalled variety. The 50,000+  acre lake features 1,200 miles of shoreline. That¡¯s equal to the shoreline of the entire eastern coast of the United States! Miles of beaches, hidden coves, and the 22nd largest dam in the U. S. make Lake Cumberland a boater¡¯s dream. In fact, it is known as the Houseboat Capital of the world! Private marinas around the lake rent houseboats and pleasure boats of various sizes. 

Another of Mother Nature¡¯s romantic locations can be found hidden deep in the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The Natural Bridge State Resort features a geological wonder. The sandstone Natural Bridge arch spans 78 feet in length and 65 feet in height. The Natural Bridge can be reached by a hike ranging from ? to 6 miles in length or via a relaxing ride on the sky lift. Either way, the views are breathtaking.

In addition to the many state parks, Kentucky is also home to Mammoth Cave National Park. Active couples will enjoy guided and self-guided tours through the longest recorded cave system in the world. More than 360 miles of cave have been explored and mapped. Tours range from 30 minutes to more than 6 hours and cover the entire spectrum of difficulty levels. 

For couples with musical interests, Kentucky had numerous options. The birthplaces and homes of Bill Monroe and Loretta Lynn are open to the public. The Renfro Valley area is home to dozens of country and gospel concerts and shows. And throughout the summer months, bluegrass festivals abound.

For history buffs, Kentucky is home to several Civil War Battlefields and the Big South Fork Scenic Railway. The railway tours travel into a scenic River Valley and make a stop at the Barthell Mining Camp. One of Kentucky¡¯s earliest mining camps, the site has been completely and authentically rebuilt to take visitors back in time to 1902. 

Break out the big hats and mint juleps and spend a day at the races! Kentucky is home to numerous horseracing tracks including the legendary Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. The Kentucky Horse Park, a working horse farm in the heart of Kentucky¡¯s famed Bluegrass region, is open to the public. The 1,200 acre farm is home to more than 50 breeds of horses and more than 30 miles of the white plank fencing for which Kentucky is known.
