Massachusetts has a lot to offer couples, looking for a romantic getaway, whether it¡¯s for a week, weekend, or day trip.
The city of Boston is definitely known for being a great walking city, but it¡¯s even better when you have someone to walk it with. The Boston Public Garden is a beautifully landscaped area, right in the center of town. Nestled at the meeting points of Beacon, Boylston, Arlington and Charles Streets, you can stroll though the walkways and enjoy the lush surroundings of the unique gardens, bridges and landscaping. Tucked in corners and in out-of-the-way nooks, you¡¯ll find statues of legends from Boston¡¯s history. Coming into the Gardens at the Charles and Beacon Streets entrance, you¡¯ll find a brass display of little ducks, following their mother, a tribute to Robert McCloskey¡¯s ¡°Make Way for Ducklings.¡± On a nice summer day, you can enjoy a peaceful ride through the lagoon in one of the infamous Swan Boats.
Across Charles Street you can find Boston Commons, also filled with winding pathways and landscaping, and during winter, home to ice skating on Frog Pond. On the other side of the Public Gardens, at Arlington and Newbury Streets, begins a shopper¡¯s delight ¨C with many high-end stores. Nestled all along the street are cafes and bistros, a great place to stop for a coffee and a treat, and watch passers-by.
If you are looking for something a little more laid back, you can hop on the subway, the Red Line, over to Harvard Square. Harvard Square is Cambridge¡¯s laid-back answer to the upscale style of Back Bay and Beacon Hill¡¯s Newbury Street. Enjoy a coffee or ice cream and take a walk over to Harvard Yard.
Off the beaten path and out of the city by about thirty minutes, you¡¯ll find the North Shore towns of Newburyport, Marblehead, Gloucester, and Rockport, to name a few.
Plum Island is home to Newburyport, where you will find Plum Island Light. Established in 1788, this lighthouse is now cared for by the Friends of Plum Island Light, Inc. Make the plans ahead of time, and you can enjoy a cozy dinner for two inside the lighthouse, catered by a local restaurant of your choice. Enjoy the small town of Marblehead, just northeast of Salem, right on the ocean. This quintessential New England town is complete with little cottages and homes reminiscent of England¡¯s of England¡¯s countryside. You will feel like you¡¯ve taken a trip back in time when you stroll along the narrow streets in and out of shops. If you decide to stay overnight, the local accommodations are the Marblehead Inn, a turn-of-the-century bed and breakfast from the Victorian Era.
Also on the North Shore is Gloucester, where you can tour nearby Hammond Castle. Often known as the most haunted castle in America, this castle was built between 1926 and 1929 by inventor John Hays Hammond, Jr. Hammond was second only to Thomas Edison in patents, and is known as the inventor of the remote control. The castle and architectural pieces are a work of elements from the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries. You can take self-guided of the house and grounds, which include the living areas, tower galleries, exhibit halls, as well as smaller rooms and passageways. You can also enjoy spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Rockport is home to Halibut State Park, where you can just enjoy the scenic outdoors. Nestled among the flat rocks you may even catch a glimpse of a whole family of seals. Tours of the Quarry take place on Saturday mornings, from 10-11am.
In Western Massachusetts, you can find small towns, such as Amherst and Northhampton, that offer the quaint eccentricity that New England is known for.
Traveling towards the Cape, the South Shore is home to Martha¡¯s Vineyard, Hyannis, Edgartown, and Vineyard Haven, among others.
The South Shore is home to many summer vacationers, who long for the warm, beach atmosphere. It comes alive during the summer with all the towns that are seaside, along the Cape. Fall, Spring or Summer are great times to visit this part of Massachusetts. Just an hour away from the bustling metropolis of Boston, you¡¯ll feel like you are in another world.
Martha¡¯s Vineyard is home to quaint Bed and Breakfasts, restaurants and shopping. There are also the beautiful, flat, clay cliffs in the town of Acquinnah. Originally settled by Indians, this land in recent years was known better as Gay Head. Just last year the town was changed back to its original name.
