Richmond, once being the capitol of the Confederacy, is naturally a city steeped in American history.  To commemorate this history, Richmond is filled with museums of all types.  Below are some of the more interesting and popular museums the city has to offer.

What better way to teach children about the history of a state than to begin with the state capitol building?  The Virginia State Capitol is the second oldest capitol in continuous use since its¡¯ opening in 1788.  The building, designed by Thomas Jefferson and modeled after a Roman Temple, has a life size statue of George Washington in its central rotunda.  The capital building also has busts of eight other American presidents, all hailing from Virginia.   The thirty-minute tours are free and offered seven days a week.

Occupying five structures, including the oldest building in Richmond, the Old Stone House, is the Edgar Allan Poe Museum.  It contains the original draft of the artist¡¯s most famous poem The Raven as well as other memorabilia such as personal items, photos and Poe¡¯s childhood bed.  Poe spent much of his life in Richmond and began his literary career working for the Southern Literary Messenger.  Bricks from the building that held the Messenger are found in a garden behind the museum.  The museum itself contains a large-scale model of Richmond, as Poe knew it in the 1830¡¯s.

The White House of the Confederacy is found in a mansion occupied by Jefferson Davis during the Civil War years until Union troops marched into the city.  Over half of the items in the house were actually used by the Davis family during his presidency.  Beside the house is a museum containing over 15,000 artifacts from the Civil War including personal papers, journals and government documents of Generals Lee and Jackson.  The museum also offers children summer camps and a lecture series. Among the exhibits available for view is ¡°Hospital Life¡±.  This gallery offers documents and artifacts of both medical treatments used during the Civil War and information about the men and women who administered them.  

At the Richmond National Battlefield Park, kids can learn about the Civil War.  The battlefield itself has a visitor center with a video about the battles held there as well as photos and letters that soldiers wrote to their families. Also on the battlefield grounds is the Chimborazo Medical Museum.  Richmond had one of the largest Confederate hospitals having treated some 76,000 patients.  The museum displays medical equipment as well as information about the men and women who worked at the hospital during the war. Children have the option to become a Junior Ranger.  The Junior Ranger program is open to children between the ages of 4 and 13.  They receive an activity booklet, and once the activities are completed, a certificate of completion and badge.  

The Virginia Holocaust Museum offers children a look at a different war, World War II, and the injustices suffered by the Jewish people.  The museum seeks to educate youth by teaching tolerance through education.  While there are various exhibits dedicated to Holocaust victims, the museum focuses on the Ipson family.  Jay Ipson, who was six years old when the Nazis forced his family into the Kovno Ghetto, is the Executive Director of the museum.  Exhibits allow visitors to walk through a concentration camp, see the inside of a ghetto and see cramped hiding spaces where families would hide from persecution for up to nine months.  Because of the serious nature of the museum, it is recommended that only children age 11 and older visit.

Most children love the idea of flight and they can explore the history of it at the Virginia Aviation Museum.  The museum features thirty historic aircraft including those from World War I, World War II and Vietnam.  Here you can find a reproduction of the Wright brother¡¯s 1899 kite, 1900 glider and famous 1903 Flyer, allowing children to see the path to the first flight by man.  The 1936 Vultee V1-AD, a highly advanced single engine for its time and once owned by William Randolph Hearst, can also be found here.  In addition to seeing historic aircraft, children can also see how wings work and use the museum¡¯s flight simulator.

Finally, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond offers visitors a view of how money there is received, sorted, counted and packaged for circulation.  You can also learn how to spot counterfeit bills and what is the life expectancy for paper bills.  You will also see the part of the bank that receives checks, processing as many as one million a day.  The bank has an art collection including local artists as well as internationally known artists.

Although all the museums are not listed, the ones above should give you a good insight into the rich and varied history of Richmond.
