Rhode Island may be one of the best-kept secrets in the United States. While the entire state is only 37 miles wide and 48 miles long, the shoreline is an incredible 400 miles long!  Dubbed the ※Ocean State,§ the nation＊s smallest state has much to offer for couples looking for a romantic getaway.   From beautiful ocean beaches to upscale shopping, Rhode Island has it all.   No matter what the season, there is something for everyone.  

There are three distinct destinations for visitors to this state 每 Providence, Newport and ※South County.§   Depending on the season, each of these locations has plenty to offer.

Locals call the southern part of the state as ※South County,§ but, in reality, this affectionate moniker refers to the southern, coastal part of the state.   Narragansett is the heart of this region and, in warmer months, there is no better place to be than this picturesque town by the sea.  Narragansett is rich in history, in the latter part of the 19th century it was one of the most popular resort areas on the East Coast.  Today, the pace is slower but it is still a beautiful spot and the ocean breaks perfectly on the town beach.

Book a room in a seaside bed and breakfast within walking distance to the beach.  After enjoying a leisurely breakfast, start your day with a walk on the beach, which measures ? mile. In the summer, admission is free until 9:00 a.m.  You may want to stay at the beach and enjoy a swim or, when the weather is cooler, cross the street for a coffee and donut 每 staples of Rhode Island living!  Sit on the ※wall§ and watch the surfers who seem to be out no matter what the weather.  

Point Judith, a delightful, working fishing village, should be your next stop.  There are plenty of restaurants, all offering fresh seafood and you can enjoy lunch while watching the fishing boats return with their catch.  Make sure to try one of Rhode Island＊s specialties, a clam cake and perhaps a lobster salad roll and coffee cabinet (milkshake).  Fried clams are also a specialty and will leave you craving more!  

For a special treat, plan a ferry ride to Block Island.  The boat runs year round with more trips scheduled for the warmer months.  It＊s a nice trip, usually under an hour, but the payoff is even better.  Block Island, which is only seven miles long, is a lovely spot and offers beautiful old hotels, nature trails, incredible beaches and wildlife preserves.  Rent a bike and explore the island up-close and personal, or just relax on one of the beaches, all of which are open to the public.   Block Island is certainly conducive to romance and would be a lovely honeymoon destination.

Newport is another great seaside destination and offers elegant dining and fabulous shopping at a variety of boutiques and galleries.  Newport has music galore and is home to the world-renown Folk and Jazz festivals as well as numerous other festivals held throughout the year.  

But Newport is also rich in history and there are a number of museums and attractions sure to engage the history buff.  Take a walk along the ※Bluffs§ and see the mansions, which used to serve as summer homes to the nation＊s richest families 每 the Astors and the Vanderbilts.  These mansions are also open for tours and will give you an idea of just how elegant these people lived.

If you like the nightlife, Newport will make you smile.  With numerous jazz and music clubs as well as restaurants offering fine dining, Newport is all about romance.   There are clubs offering blues, jazz, rock, acoustic, folk and piano bars 每 something for everyone.   

If you prefer a more urban destination, plan to spend some time in Providence, the capital of the state.  Providence has a ※big city§ feel but is small enough to allow a visitor a chance to see many of the attractions.   The city has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years and has become a real rival for Boston, its bigger sister to the north.  

If you like to shop, plan on visiting Providence Place, a large, enclosed mall right in the heart of the city.  There are upscale shops, fine restaurants and more.   Another highlight is Waterplace Park, the site of the world famous WaterFire Providence.  The park was created as part of urban renewal in the early 90s, when the Providence River was literally redirected.  WaterFire is an art project where braziers are set up in the middle of the river and lit.  This is really a spectacular site, and for a real romantic evening, plan a ride on an authentic Venetian gondola.   

Providence is a university town and is rich in history and the arts.  There are excellent theatre groups, museums, and galleries.   And there is plenty of nightlife in this town! Big name entertainers frequently make a stop in Providence as well.  

Rhode Island has everything you could possibly want in a romantic destination - from beautiful beaches to elegant dining and everything in between.  Once you discover the ※Ocean State,§ you will want to return again and again.
