From the shores of the Gulf of Mexico to the nightlife downtown, Fort Myers offers something for everyone; most especially in the category of dining. 

A trip down San Carlos Boulevard to McGregor Boulevard results in some of the best Mexican food north of the border. La Casita features authentic Mexican food in a fun atmosphere that caters to couples, groups, and families with children. The homemade chips and tangy salsa served upon being seated whets the appetite for more delicious fare to come. Traditional Mexican dishes like beef tacos and enchiladas are rounded out with specials like lime chicken and chimichangas. Tasty side dishes of rice and pinto beans accompany most entrees. The prices are reasonable, with the average entree costing about $9. Zesty margaritas--with or without salt, top off this dining experience.

Route 41 in Fort Myers, otherwise known as the Tamiami Trail, finds not one, but two Mel's Diners. Florida originals, these diners feature delicious home cooked meals like Mom used to make. From liver and onions (Mel's lightly breads the liver with flour before cooking) to juicy 1/2 pound hamburgers, there is something for everyone at Mel's. Top off your meal with a delicacy. Mile High Chocolate or Banana Cream Pie are two tempting desserts that have made Mel's famous. Don't order one for yourself, however. These generous portions are made to share or to take an ample serving home. The decor at Mel's is from the 1940's and 1950's, and includes kitchen memorabilia and signed photos of various celebrities. Mel's is relatively inexpensive and features a children's menu. Most meals are under $10 and provide more than enough for two. Don't arrive at Mel's at 5 PM, however, as that's when the local senior citizens arrive to eat.

Citrola's is undoubtedly the best Italian restaurant in Fort Myers. Located on the beach, it features both indoor and outdoor dining. From authentic Italian fare like eggplant parmesan and stuffed shells to lighter selections like pizza or meatball subs, Citrola's is an experience. Guests can watch the food being prepared in the tiny kitchen. The tempting aromas waft both indoors and out. The atmosphere is traditional Italian, with red and white checkered tablecloths. Top off your spaghetti or pepperoni pie with a trip right next door to 2000 Flavors. Here you'll find the most delicious homemade ice cream on the beach. From a modest scoop to a giant sundae, this rich and creamy ice cream is to die for. We still haven't figured out, however, why they call themselves "2000 Flavors." While the selections are definitely numerous, there aren't nearly that many from which to choose.

Further down the beach, steak and salad lovers should check out Charley's. Boasting one of the best salad bars around, the entrees include steak and seafood, including a local catch of the day. Charley's is a bit pricier than average restaurants, but features early bird specials between 4 and 6 PM. These specials include regular portions at reduced prices. Get in line early, because early bird specials are very popular among Florida's elderly population.

If Greek food sounds enticing, visit Orpheus. Located on the beach, the setting reminds diners of ancient Greece. The food is authentic and delicious. Try the lamb stew and stuffed grape leaves. Cross the bridge back to the mainland and stop at the Split Rail Family Restaurant. Owned and managed by the same folks at Orpheus, this side of the bridge features traditional American fare and boasts one of the best breakfasts around.

The Love Boat Ice Cream Shop on San Carlos Boulevard is a dessert lover's paradise. Featuring hand turned homemade ice cream, locals and tourists alike gather here many evenings to top off their nighttime meal. Sit inside or out, but visit The Love Boat on an evening you've eaten sparsely.

From a hotdog at the ballpark during the Red Sox Spring Training to a tasty grouper straight off a fisherman's boat, there is something to tempt every palate in Fort Myers. The next time you're in Florida, veer south and head west. Fort Myers and its many restaurants are waiting to feed you.
