No trip to North Carolina would be complete without a stop at the states capital, Raleigh. Located two hours from the coast and 3 hours from the mountains Raleigh can be a great vacation spot for couples, or a wonderful stop between destinations. Here are a few of the wonderful things awaiting you in Raleigh:

Visit the Art Museum: The museum of art located on Blue Ridge Rd can be a great afternoon activity. The museum offers several exhibits year round as well as specialty touring collections and a guest lecture series. Check the museums website at ncartmuseum.org for a calendar of their upcoming events. Admission to the museum itself is free but some lectures and events will have a small fee associated with them. During the summer months the museum offers Music and Movies of the museum lawn that can make for a great romantic summer outing. Movies range from popular mainstream films to French independents. A musical guest of the same genre will usually perform the same nighta film is being shown(A French band for a French movie etc). For a romantic brunch or lunch option, try the museums restaurant. Overlooking the museum grounds the restaurant offers fine dining in an outstanding atmosphere.

Go for a nature walk: Shelly Lake (Lake Lynn) located in North Raleigh can be a great romantic way to spend a summer or early fall afternoon. The lake has a three-mile walking trail around it as well as access to the capital nature trail that can take you around the city for a longer walk.  During the summer the lake offers paddle boat, canoe and kayak rentals by the hour as well as several picnic areas. Home to ducks, swans, turtles, and a great number of birds the lake can be a great place to sit by the water and watch the wildlife around you. Open daily, the lake and surrounding park can be accessed off of a parking lot located Lynn road, parking lot on Millbrook Rd and by foot through the cities nature trail.

Visit Downtown: Downtown Raleigh can be a great setting for a romantic afternoon and evening. During the day visit the City Market, located in the center of downtown, the city market offers several small independent shops, as well as Art Space a studio/gallery space for local independent artists. History buffs will enjoy a walk to the nearby historical sites and civil war landmarks. See a canon on the yard of the state capitol building and while you¡¯re there take a tour of the building and experience a piece of history. As the night gets later head further downtown to Glenwood South on Glenwood Ave. Located downtown, Glenwood south is home to several fine dining as well as more casual restaurants and bars. All within walking distance of each other, Glenwood South can be a great place to begin an evening of fun that can last as late into the night.

Go see a Show: No matter what your taste Raleigh undoubtedly has a venue for you. Downtown, the BTI center and Memorial auditorium host everything from Broadway musicals to rock concerts. Raleigh¡¯s Alltel Pavilion has an extensive summer concert series features popular music and lawn seating as well as a covered pavilion. For the more independently minded The Raleigh Little Theater puts on shows year round from musicals to dramas featuring local actors and actresses, and the Brewery and Lincoln Theater downtown offer an outlet into the states independent music scene.

Go to a sporting event: Home to NC State University Raleigh plays host to a full range of college athletics. If hockey¡¯s your game, the NHL¡¯s Hurricanes home games are played in Raleigh¡¯s BTI center. In the summer months the nearby Durham Bulls and Carolina Mudcats (in Zebulon) can offer a great evening of minor league baseball.
