Puerto Rico is an island in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, roughly rectangular in shape and measuring 35 by 105 miles. It is a self-governing commonwealth of the United States which has become a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful scenery and wealth of things to do.  Gorgeous beaches with crystal clear water, pristine forests, world famous surfing areas, dazzling casinos, gourmet restaurants, relaxing spas, championship golf ¨C Puerto Rico has it all.

The weather in Puerto Rico is tropical.  Daytime temperatures vary between 80 ¨C 85 degrees and nights average 70 ¨C 75 degrees.  In general, the North side of the island, which faces the Atlantic Ocean, is a bit colder than the South side, which faces the Caribbean Sea.  The wet season is from November to April and the Northeast part of the island gets the most rain, averaging 60 inches per year.  On the opposite Southwest side of the island, only 36 inches of rain falls on average.  It is also important to note that Puerto Rico is not immune to Caribbean hurricanes, although they are not a common occurrence.  The hurricane season runs from August to September. 

Due to the warm weather, even the fanciest resorts suggest casual summer clothing.  A light sweater should suffice for early mornings or evenings. What else to pack really depends on what types of activities you plan to participate in.  A swimsuit will probably be on everyone¡¯s list.  Most resorts offer some sort of fitness classes, so bring your exercise clothes if that sort of thing appeals to you.  Jeans may be in order if you fancy a horseback ride on the beach.  Are upscale restaurants or nightclubs part of your plan?  Add a few dressy outfits to your list.  You might consider rain gear if you are a dedicated fan of the outdoors planning on visiting the nature preserves regardless of the weather. 

The hardest part about planning your Puerto Rico vacation will probably be choosing where to stay as there are a multitude of resorts and beautiful beaches on every side of the island.  When most people think of Puerto Rico, the first city that comes to mind is San Juan, which is on the North side of the island, and indeed this is where the greatest number of resorts is to be found.  The closest large resort to Old San Juan is the Caribe Hilton Hotel in the area known as Puerta de Tierra.  The two main resort beaches are a bit farther to the East.  The first one you come to is Condado.  There you will find the Wyndham Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino, the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino and the Radisson Ambassador Plaza Hotel & Casino.  

The most famous beach in the San Juan area is Isla Verde, where you will find the Intercontinental San Juan Resort & Casino and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Spa & Casino.  Most of these hotels run in the $200 - $400 range per night, although the Ritz-Carlton runs closer to $300 to $700 and has a fully developed program for children.  Some of the hotels offer spa or dining packages, including the Wyndham, Hilton and Ritz-Carlton.  The rates are much lower in the summer months and this holds true all over the island.  The San Juan area in general is full of high rise resorts and is a great place to stay if you are looking for nightlife.   If you prefer a quieter or more secluded location, you will find many choices in other areas.

Not far to the West of San Juan is the small town of Dorado, which is home to a number of golf courses.  Here you will find the Hyatt Dorado Beach Resort & Country Club with two golf courses, a casino, a full service spa, Camp Hyatt for kids and the famous river style swimming pool.  Room rates run about $200 to $500.  Nearby is the more reasonable Embassy Suites Hotel Dorado del Mar Beach & Golf Resort which has one golf course and also has a children¡¯s program.  

In general, the Atlantic coast of Puerto Rico is less of a tourist destination because the waters can be rough and challenging for swimming.  There are no other major resorts heading West, but there are a few beaches worth visiting near the town of Isabela.  Middles and Shacks are mostly known as surfing beaches and Shacks is also known as one of the best windsurfing and kite surfing spots in the world during the winter months.  Jobos, another nearby beach, is a great place for snorkeling and diving.

The West coast of Puerto Rico is home to many interesting tourist destinations, including the famous Rincon Beach.  The World Surfing Championships were held there in 1968 and it has been a mecca for surfers ever since.  Rincon is situated on a point where the Caribbean meets the Atlantic, so the beaches in this area can have very different qualities.  Further South is the picturesque village of Boqueron, which has a lovely beach and some nearby wildlife refuges.  Lodging on the West coast is almost all in the form of small hotels, apartment rentals and guest houses.  The two exceptions are in Mayaguez, the third largest city in Puerto Rico and also where you will find the only zoo on the island.  Mayaguez is home to The Holiday Inn & El Tropical Casino, which runs about $100 - $200 per night and offers dining and activity packages.  The Mayaguez Resort & Casino is the other option, with packages also available or rooms about $150 - $300 per night.

The South coast of Puerto Rico is a great choice for those who love the outdoors.  The first tourist area you fill find is Guanica, which is located on a beautiful bay and adjacent to the 1,570 acre Guanica Dry Forest Preserve.  The preserve is an example of a very rare ecosystem and home to a huge variety of bird species.  Right off the coast are many cays that are perfect for snorkeling and diving.  In Guanica you will find the Copamarina Beach Resort, one of Puerto Rico¡¯s only resorts offering all inclusive packages which run about $150 - $350 per person per night.  Rooms are available at about the same price, but based on double occupancy.  The Copamarina has a spa and its own dive operation.  A bit further down the coast is Puerto Rico¡¯s second largest city, Ponce, a lovely area with many museums and the three cays of Caja de Muerto Nature Reserve just off the coast. Ponce is home to another Holiday Inn & El Tropical Casino, which runs about $150 - $200 per night, and the Hilton Ponce & Casino at about $150 - $400 per night with dining, spa and golf packages available.

The East side of Puerto Rico has some of the most beautiful scenery and luxurious accommodations on the island.  The town of Fajardo is where you will find the lovely Seven Seas Beach, ideal for snorkeling.   Fajardo is also home to the Wyndham El Conquistador Resort & Golden Door Spa, what many consider to be the best resort on the island. This resort has its own golf course and a casino and rooms run about $250 - $700 per night.  The associated Las Casitas Villas run about $450 - $2,000 per night and have up to a three bedroom size available.

The other major resort area on the East Coast is near the town of Luquillo, an excellent location due to its proximity to the Caribbean National Forest, also known as El Yunque Rainforest.  The beach is also lovely and features the unique ¡°Sea Without Barriers¡± program to help those in wheelchairs get into the water.  The two major resorts in this area are the Westin Rio Mar Beach Golf Resort & Spa and the Paradisus Puerto Rico.  The Westin offers the greatest variety of packages, including those that focus on dining, golf, tennis, sightseeing, spa services and children¡¯s programs.  They even have an all inclusive program which runs about $300 - $400 per person per night.  Rooms alone run about $400 - $800.  The Paradisus is also known as an all inclusive resort which runs about $300- $600 per person per night.  This resort also has a children¡¯s program, golf course and spa.

There is one more tourist area in Puerto Rico not to be overlooked.  The islands of Culebra and Vieques lie just off the East Coast.  Much of Culebra is dedicated as a National Wildlife Refuge, including the famous Flamenco beach.  Most of the accommodations there are in the form of rentals or guesthouses.  The most well known beach on Vieques is Sun Bay, beautiful by day and bioluminescent by night.  The lodging options are similar here with the exception of Wyndham Martineau Bay Resort, which runs about $250- $350 per night and has spa and all inclusive packages available.

Puerto Rico is truly a traveler¡¯s paradise.  Whether you prefer nightlife and city surroundings or secluded beaches and ecotourism, Puerto Rico has a place in the sun for you.
