Road trips are a terrific way for families to spend time together. Even if you go alone, you can savor the sense of being in charge as you drive one mile after another toward your destination. To make your road trip as smooth as possible, don't forget to prepare the car before you go. Here's how:

1. Clean out the car and change the air filter. This will help to circulate fresh air that is free of dust, animal dander (if you transport pets at regular times), and germs. Wipe off the seats with a damp cloth, vacuum every inch of the interior and trunk, and hose down the floor mats after removing them from the vehicle. Your sense of freedom and enjoyment on the road will be enhanced in a newly-cleaned car that will feel almost like new. Plus, eliminating clutter will make room for the luggage you plan to take along on your trip.

2. Get your car maintenance before hitting the road. Even if you are a few miles shy of your next scheduled oil change, get one now anyway, especially if your trip will cover enough miles to put you over the due-date. Make sure to have the technicians check your tire pressure, change the oil filter, lubricate the door hinges, and fill fluid levels. Your car will be running like a spring chicken after this careful attention.

3. Have your tires and brakes inspected. Low tread, bald patches, or bubbles indicate the need for a replacement. Don't wait until you are on the road and risk the chance of a blowout or flat tire. Take care of this important feature before starting your road adventure. Get your brakes checked if they squeal or you have to pump them for full braking action. 

4. Schedule a tune-up. You will only need to do this if it is nearly time. Ask the service personnel also to check the radiator, the battery, the fan, and all belts to ensure that everything under the hood is working as it should. 

5. Pack your glove compartment. Arrange space for a map, a tire gauge, matches, a flashlight, a pen and paper, and other utensils that may come in handy. Put spare coins in a small purse or wallet that can be stored in the glove compartment and used for tolls or snacks. Include a place for important papers like the car's title and your owner's registration. Gum or hard candy might be welcome later, too.

6. Organize the trunk. Start with emergency tools like a jack and a spare tire. Add a blanket in case of an accident, along with a jug of water if the car overheats. Don't forget an empty gas can in the off chance you run out of gas. 

Inside the car you should have a container of drinking water and a healthy snack like fresh fruit, as long as it doesn't go bad, or a small bag of pretzels. You may want to toss a jacket in the back seat. There are sure to be other things you want to bring along, so add these to your packing list for inclusion with the luggage. Then hop in, turn on the engine, and head out on the highway!
