When you think Portland, think of the outdoors. Notoriously rainy weather aside, the city and its surrounding area abounds with breathtaking scenery, fascinating places, and invigorating activities for visiting couples. For any activities that may involve walking, be sure to have comfortable shoes or hiking boots. And bring a camera ¨C you won¡¯t want to miss any photo opportunities.

Walking tours: Explore the history, architecture, bridges, parks, fountains, artwork, and unique places in Portland, the city which bears the nickname "City of Roses." Guided walking tours take place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and youths. You¡¯ll come away understanding more about the city¡¯s history and attractions than most residents.

There are hiking trails to the west and hiking trails to the east. Portland¡¯s gigantic Forest Park stretches over most of the city¡¯s west hills, spanning more than 5,000 acres with a matrix of trails - 74 miles - of various degrees of difficulty beneath a tree-shrouded wilderness. Trailheads can be found at many places, including Washington Park, the Oregon Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, Pittock Mansion or to the far north off Hwy. 26 near the St. John¡¯s Bridge. If foot travel is too slow for you, many trails are suitable for mountain biking and equestrian traffic.

If you have transportation and can swing east of town, you will find hiking in the lush Columbia River Gorge to be a delightful treat. Some of these trails are a tad on the steep side, but the reward for your effort is generous. Designated as a National Scenic Area, the gorge hosts the greatest concentration of waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest, highlighted by the 620 foot Multnomah Falls, the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States.

Rent a bike, grab a map of Portland¡¯s extensive bicycle routes and peddle all over town, checking out the flat downtown waterfronts on the Willamette River, Columbia River frontage trails on the north, the more rugged and variably-inclined Forest Park trails in the west hills or the Springwater Corridor stretching east from the riverfront to the rural city of Boring, Oregon.

Portlanders love their craft beers, and if you fancy a taste for the malted beverages, you will too. You¡¯ll find them everywhere in town, but some of the more popular brewpubs include McMenamins (as common as convenience stores here) Bridgeport, Nor¡¯wester, Portland Brewing Company and Widmer Brothers Brewing Company. If you¡¯re traveling with a dog, try the Lucky Labrador Brewing Company: canine pals are welcome there.

Are you in a theatre mood? Check out Portland Center for the Performing Arts which includes Keller Auditorium, Arlene Schnitzer, Newmark Theatre and Dolores Winningstad Theatre. Other popular options include Artists Repertory Theatre, Theatre! Theatre!, Triangle Productions and Imago Theatre.

Outdoor concerts run through the summer months. Sponsored by the Oregon Symphony and the Portland Parks and Recreation Bureau, these take place in a variety of outdoor Portland park venues, delighting the ears for free with performances by local musicians ranging from solo folk gigs to traditional jazz/swing band sounds. Often performed at various amphitheatres during the sunniest months, the events are perfect for picnicking.

Rosy View: Couples love Washington Park¡¯s fragrant Rose Garden and its stunning, elevated view of the Rose City and Mt. Hood. Nearby Japanese Gardens make for a culturally unique floral experience, while the west side of the park presents Hoyt Arboretum and the Oregon Zoo. A one-stop, multiple-featured recreational location, chances are you will find something to enjoy in Washington Park.

Boat Cruise: The Portland Spirit Boat Cruise offers a trip up and down the Willamette River with a variety of cruises, dinner, lunch, brunch, sightseeing and Friday Early Escape. The leisurely excursions lend a unique backdrop to a summer evening. Prices range from $16 for the escape cruise to $60 for dinner.

Train tours: The Mt. Hood Railroad excursion train travels through the beautiful vistas of the Hood River Valley, by the river and through the forests with the stunning backdrop of the towering Cascade Mountains. A narration of the local history accompanies the experience. Light food and beverages are offered on the ride, which takes place in vintage Pullman rail cars. A variety of rides and themes are offered, ranging in price per person from $23 for the excursion ride to $80 for the Murder Mystery or Comedy Dinner trains.

The Lewis & Clark Explorer Train runs passengers between Portland and Astoria along the scenic shores of the Columbia River. Passengers have the option of staying the night in historic Astoria or returning to Portland that evening. Hotel/train packages are available. Operating between June 3 and October 3, roundtrip rides are $35 per person.
