Things to do and see

1.Water Adventures:

a)Boston Beach- is one of the most popular beaches and is located east of Port Antonio. It is a flawless beach with crystal waters and coconut palms. Surfers tend to head to this sparkling beach for the waves. 

b)Navy Beach- is one of the three small beaches on the Navy Island accessible by ferry. This quiet and peaceful beach, tickled by gentle surf, is ideal for sunbathing, snorkeling and scuba diving. 

c)Blue Lagoon- is a must see place while in Port Antonio. It is not a beach but is a mineral pool of deep azure water that changes color throughout the day. A fascinating Jamaican flora overlooks the mystifying lagoon from the surrounding hills. There is a water sports center, changing room and a lovely terrace restaurant serving mouthwatering Jamaican Jerk cuisine. According to the locals, the lagoon is bottomless, but it is actually 180 feet deep. It is a great spot for kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, spring bathing, swimming or just relaxing. The villas at the lagoon have extraordinary architecture. They are a photographer¡¯s delight.

d)Frenchman¡¯s Cove- is a very popular beach resort with the locals as well as visitors. It is one of the best beaches of the island with a refreshing cold stream flowing into the sea and is a favorite wedding spot. 

e)San Beach- is protected by a coral reef and has beautiful calm waters. It is a great family beach perfect for swimming, picnics, snorkeling and scuba diving. 

f)Excellent scuba diving spots:

i) Alligator West- has calm, warm, crystal-clear waters. It is a prime playground for beginners looking for unspoiled coral reefs that reveal a colorful world of deep-sea creatures. 

ii) Alligator Head- is for intermediate and advanced diving enthusiasts. Those taking the plunge find numerous sea fans, sponges and tubes. 

iii) Trident Wall- is a place for advanced divers. This spot has sunken wrecks, vertical walls and caves to explore and a black coral reef.

g)Rio Grande Rafting- is a major attraction for locals and visitors. This famous rafting trip on the Rio Grande river is enjoyed the most during the afternoon when the banks come alive with activity of the local residents. It is a 2-hour trip on a bamboo raft, which were originally built to transport bananas. 

2.Hiking: 

a)Valley Hikes- offers guided hikes in the Rio Grande valley. The trails traverse spectacular forest canopy and the trained guides shed light on the array of plant and animal life that are encountered along the way. 

b)Darley Trail- This is a 4-hour hike beginning at Berridale. It crosses the Rio Grande river by raft, follows a walking trail passing three waterfalls and ends in Say river. 

c)Plantation trail- This is a teak-lined walk through banana and coffee plantations and is a botany lover¡¯s paradise. This is a less daunting trek where one might get a glimpse of the musical tree frog.

d)White River Trail- This 10-hour hike with spellbinding views starts at Millbank and ends at the White river which has a spectacular view of the seven falls upstream of the White river. One can come across the swallowtail butterflies along the trail. 

3.Biking:

Blue Mountain Bike Tours- Mountain bikers will discover interesting terrain throughout the Blue Mountains starting at 5000 feet and can glide down through luxurious tropical rain forests, brilliant waterfalls and excellent coffee plantations. Breakfast, lunch and refreshments along with biking equipment are all available for such an excursion. 

4.Bird Watching:

Hundreds of bird species, from tiny hummingbirds to magnificent frigate birds, call Port Antonio home. Several exotic birds sighted include Jamaican mango, Jamaican parakeet, white-chinned thrush, sad flycatcher, loggerhead kingbird, ruddy quail dove, northern mockingbird, black-throated green warbler and Jamaican becard. 

5.Natural delights:

a)Athenry Gardens- This is a 185-acre banana plantation featuring hundreds of species of plants against a mountain backdrop. 

b)Nonesuch Caves- These caves are well lit and filled with fascinating stalactites and stalagmites that are millions of years old. 

c)Crystal Springs Resort- This 150 acre eco-park is the home for one of the largest orchid collections of the Caribbean with over 15,000 varieties of plants. This delightful property also includes a bird sanctuary that holds bird watching tours and a picnic park. 

d)Somerset Falls- A gondola ride takes the visitors to these charming falls set amidst the luscious greens of the rain forest. Adventurers can take a dip here or stroll around the gardens.

Titchfield- This picturesque neighborhood featuring beautiful Victorian-style buildings attracts a lot of tourists.

The Village of St. George is a new and remarkable shopping center built using elegant Georgian architecture that reflects the many cultures of Jamaica. This is a good place for souvenirs and gift items. For art and craft lovers, Port Antonio offers Craft Market and Carriacou Gallery, which have a first class collection of silk, oil paintings, embroidery, hand-loomed fabrics, wood and woven straw items. The locals also sell hand-made jams, jellies and spices.

Port Antonio has menus that fit all tastes. However, the Jamaican jerk-style food prepared with a variety of herbs and spices is a must for every visitor. 

a)Blue Lagoon- is a casual eatery overlooking the lagoon that serves authentic Jamaican dishes including jerk chicken and vegetarian pizza.
