Tennessee isn¡¯t only known for its beautiful scenery and great country music, this state has plenty of fishing opportunities for both the experienced and novice angler. Of course the most well-known waterway that crisscrosses the state is the magnificent Tennessee River. 

This river begins in the southwest corner of the state at the borders of Alabama and Mississippi and winds its way towards Kentucky. On the lower end of the Tennessee, anglers catch trophy size smallmouth bass on Pickwick Lake. The great benefit of fishing Pickwick is fishermen can actually cover the three states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee without buying additional licenses. 

There are various feeder creeks along the Kentucky Lake section of the Tennessee River, and many of these are excellent waters to catch a variety of fish. Whites Creek and Cedar Creek are both known for their large bass population. Beech River and Duck River are comprised of nutrient filled backwaters, and they make excellent feeding grounds. 

Kentucky Lake is home to several varieties of bass including black bass, smallmouth bass, and largemouth bass. 

Bass isn¡¯t the only plentiful fish in Tennessee. Several different types of catfish are found in some of Tennessee¡¯s waterways. Blue catfish are known for their often extremely large size. These big river cats are located in the Tennessee River, the Cumberland River, and the Mississippi River. There are strict regulations pertaining to the size and amount of daily catfish that can be caught. These regulations, however, will ensure that the catfish population continues to become more abundant. 

If you are searching for that trophy size blue catfish, you will need to fish in the larger sections of the river. If, however, you are interested in the smaller flat catfish, the tailwaters of these rivers are excellent places to fish. Flat catfish are also known to linger around rocky embankments that are bordered by timber. 

If channel cats are more your speed, then you will want to visit Fall Creek Falls Lake. This lake, which is located in Fall Creek Falls State Park, is the home of the record channel catfish. It weighed in at forty-one pounds. Channel catfish anglers also find success in several lakes including Reelfoot, Woods, Doulas, J. Percy Priest, and Old Hickory. 

There are eighteen lakes in Tennessee which are managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA), and these are called Family Fishing Lakes. The lakes were designed with families in mind. Inboard motors, swimming and water skiing are not allowed in any of these lakes. The lakes offer plenty of opportunity to fish from the bank, and most have fishing piers. You will need to pay a nominal fee for a permit.

There are several reservoirs in Tennessee that are widely recognized as popular fishing areas. Crappie and stripe are often caught at Boone Reservoir. Norris Reservoir typically yields smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, and crappie. If you are interested in fishing for trout, you might want to visit Watauga Reservoir, and catfish are popular at Melton Hill Reservoir. 

Hiwassee River is a fly fisherman¡¯s dream. Located close to Chattanooga, the Hiwassee is home to several varieties of bass, but the big draw for this river is its trout population. Anglers can fly fish for rainbow, brown, and brook trout, which are all stocked in this river. You can venture along this river on your own, or you can hire one of the many river guides to ensure you have a successful fishing adventure. No matter what type of fishing you enjoy or what area of the state you visit, Tennessee can make your fishing trip a pleasure.
