All good mornings start with a well-balanced breakfast.  There is no better way to spend your early morning than taking in one of the thousands of local panaderias (bakeries).  Whether you choose San Juan, roadside towns like Caguas and Cayey, or within Ponce, finding a panaderia is as easy as sticking your nose out the window.  The scent of fresh baked pan (bread) fills the muggy air from the early morning until the late afternoon.  A must have is the sandwich de huevos y jamon (ham and egg sandwich) with caf¨¦ con leche (coffee and milk).  Now you¡¯re ready for some sightseeing.

There¡¯s no doubt Ponce has earned the name ¡°La Perla del Sur¡± (The Pearl of the South).  The town is cavern of gems.  When your eyes feast on the colonial and picturesque pueblo containing the Parque de Bombas and the Plaza de las Delicias, you¡¯ll soon discover why.  The Parque de Bombas a century old, red and black wooden firehouse that once housed the Ponce Fire Department is now a renovated museum.  A stroll around the plaza leads you to a geyser of fountains and statues that form the heart and soul of the Plaza de las Delicias.  Surrounded by an abundance of flamboyan trees, the plaza sits adjacent to the Cathedral de Nuestra Senora de la Guadalupe.  

After a morning stroll through the pueblo, walk up El Vigia Hill and embark on another spectacular jewel of Ponce. Providing a spectacular view of the city are the Museo Castillo Serralles and La Cruz Del Vigia.  Perched over the pueblo and the rest of Ponce, La Cruz Del Vigia is a 100-foot observation tower providing an unforgettable view of the Caribbean Sea.  The tower commemorates the El Vigia neighborhood of elite mansions that once stood on the hillside above the pueblo.  Sitting slightly below the tower is the Museo Castillo Servalles.  The Museum houses the original 1920¡¯s Spanish Revival mansion built by the wealthy rum-producing Servalles family. Restored in 1986 by the city of Ponce, the museum and mansion are now open daily for visitors.  An extravagant and lengthy garden floats above the city and sea, savoring a simulated taste for the sugar baron lifestyle.  

Art lovers flock from miles around to visit our next destination.  The Museo de Arte de Ponce is a world-class museum housing one of the finest art collections in Latin America.  Along with being immaculate and impressive, the Ponce Museum of Art is the largest museum in the Caribbean.  From European classics to modern Puerto Rican, the museum offers both Baroque and pre-Raphaelite paintings.  Located across from the Universidad de Catolitica de Ponce, the building itself is a work of art.  Museum features include a wooden shell-shaped staircase and a series of sky lit, angular galleries outlining a collection of fourteenth to nineteenth century European paintings.  The museum is open daily and costs $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children.  

In the heart of Ponce, as the name says, Mark¡¯s at the Melia is a place of tradition.  All good days end with a fine dinner.  Located across from the Plaza las Delicias, the Hotel Melia is the place to stay in downtown Ponce.  Opened by renowned chef Mark French, the restaurant takes traditional criolla comida (Puerto Rican cuisine) and adds a new wave of fusion to the menu.  The experience of eating at Mark¡¯s at the Melia combines flavorful foods like the local favorite Mofongo (mashed plantains) with fresh and delicious seafood.  Some other dining options include a handful of seaside restaurants located off Highway 3.  The most notable is Pito¡¯s Seafood Caf¨¦ with a wide array of seafood entrees and live music overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
