Connecticut is one of those lucky states that has enough to keep you occupied while at home, but offers enough from its neighboring states to make you want to leave.
Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island are all close enough to drive to and be home the same day. Here are a few places to visit while out and about.
New York City is an obvious choice when deciding on a day trip from Connecticut. The city offers cultural destinations on Broadway and museums that are world renowned. There are amazing shopping and dining opportunities at every turn. Finally, the city has the energy that can reinvigorate any weary soul and provides an escape that is second to none. Just the drive down on Interstate 95 and onto the Long Island Expressway is reason enough to leave the state. The adventure onto the island never stops when you realize that the island isn¡¯t one big city with skyscrapers, but a mixture of various landscapes. Any trip into the surrounding boroughs of Manhattan touches off an opportunity to taste and see the diverse ethnic backgrounds that make Long Island a must-visit destination.
Massachusetts is a little further away but that doesn¡¯t distract Connecticut residents from crossing the border. Sturbridge Village sits in the center of the state where Interstate 84 and Interstate 90 intersect. Children will enjoy checking out the life of a rural village in the 1830s. The village covers more than 200 acres, which house more than 40 exhibits and demonstrations by members of the staff, all costumed in 19th-century clothing. Some of the exhibits and demonstrations at Sturbridge Village are ongoing, like glass making and the J. Cheney Wells Clock Gallery. Every hour on the hour, the gallery echoes with the sounds of chiming clocks in unison. Other demonstrations are seasonal and include maple sugaring, making cider in the press and sheep shearing.
Rhode Island calls and you answer as you drift across the state to the beautiful city of Newport. Here you will find the home of the Vanderbilts and their palatial estate The Breakers. Newport on Rhode Island¡¯s Aquidneck Island became famous as more of the wealthy fled here to escape the summer heat of the cities. The Breakers is the most elegant of Newport's summer estates and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's dominance in turn of the century America on both the social and financial fronts. Cornelius Vanderbilt II purchased a wooden house called the Breakers in 1885 after becoming the Chairman and President of the New York Central Railroad. The house was rebuilt after a fire and based upon the Italian Renaissance-style palazzo. All 70 rooms were decorated by the most requested artisans of their time. The house is a National Historic Landmark and is surrounded by other grand summer ¡°cottages¡± that made Newport famous.
The central location of Connecticut makes a day trip New York City, Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts, and Newport, Rhode Island an easy vacation. A quick escape no matter what the season sounds like an ideal plan when searching out a day trip from Connecticut. |
