Participating in a mission trip to help others and bring them to Christ is a rewarding experience. You must prepare yourself both physically and spiritually for your journey. In the days preceding your trip, pray for strength and wisdom. Read your Bible daily, and ask that you are guided through God¡¯s words.
You can also prepare for your journey by applying for your passport well in advance of your trip. To get your first U.S. passport, you will need to apply in person, usually at the main post office in your city, with two forms of identification to prove your citizenship. Search for a passport office near you by contacting the U.S. Department of State. You will need two passport photos, which can be secured by a professional photographer or some copy shops like the UPS Store. Check the phone directory. If you need to leave in a hurry, within 14 days, expedited service for your application is available, for an additional fee through the state department. Try applying for your passport several weeks before you plan to travel. Depending on the country, special visas may be necessary.
Get any necessary immunizations. Visit a clinic specializing in travelers about three weeks before your journey. You may need to take a series of medications weeks before your travel. You would also want to get any shots in advance of your trip in case you suffer from a reaction because of the medication. The Centers for Disease Control has updated information for disease outbreaks in various parts of the world.
Take care of any household chores before your trip. Do any cleaning, and pay all of your bills in advance so that you would not be worried about these details during your trip. Complete all of your packing at least two weeks in advance of the mission. For tropical climates, you will need lightweight clothes that are made of natural fibers. Avoid synthetics. Always bring comfortable shoes and formal clothing that you can wear to church services and special occasions. Pack as light as possible. You may have to carry your bags up and downstairs and/or through rugged areas. Be sure to pack insect repellant in containers that you can both and carry with you. Some Third World countries do not have good lighting at night. Bring a flashlight and extra batteries. It¡¯s also smart to buy a money pack that you can strap under a T-shirt or loose-fitting clothing. That¡¯s a safe place to keep your passport as well as your extra money.
Go shopping for small gifts that you may want to bring with you. It¡¯s generally a good practice to bring a small gift for your host if you staying with a family. Get the names and ages of their children and bring age appropriate gifts. Children love treats, crayons, coloring books, picture books, or American games.
Double check your flight information and verify your ride to the airport. Leave contact information with your family members back home. If your trip is not associated with your own church, leave contact information with your pastor. Get plenty of sleep the day before your journey, and leave early to avoid airport traffic. Just before your trip, join your mission group and immerse yourselves in a group prayer before your journey.
