He¡¯e nalu, or surfing, is an ancient sport that has been recorded in chants and in petroglyphs from the Hawaiian Islands that date back to 1500 A.D. Surfing is actually thousands of years old, practiced before the Polynesians migrated to the Hawaiian Islands. The sport was almost destroyed by Christian Missionaries, who considered surfing to be pagan.  Fortunately, a small core of Hawaiians continued to surf.  The great surfer, Duke Kahanamoko, was asked to travel from Waikiki to the Mainland in 1907 to demonstrate skills in Redondo Beach, California.  This exhibition resulted in an explosion of interest in surfing, and the beginning of not only an industry, but for many, a way of life.

The Hawaiian Islands have two surfing seasons, from roughly November to March and from June through October. Knowing your abilities will help you pick the right place and the right time of year to surf.  For example, if you are a beginner, you will not want to do anything but watch daredevil surfers at Waiamea Bay, Oahu, during the winter months when the waves can reach a spectacular height of twenty-five feet or more.  On the other hand, Waiamea Bay is as flat as a pancake during the summer months and is useless for anyone interested in standing up on a board.

The following are suggestions on where to surf year round while visiting the Islands.  Depending on your skill level, this should also tell you where it might be best to be a spectator instead.

Oahu

Oahu is home to almost all of the most famous surfing spots in the Islands, including not only Waiamea Bay, but Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach on the North Shore of Oahu.  These locations reap the benefits of winter storms from Alaska.  Makaha Beach, on the Western Shore, is another famous place where professional and very experienced surfers ride the waves during the winter months.  If you are looking for a year round surfing experience, particularly if you are a beginner, go to Waikiki Beach.  Waikiki also has waves when the North Shore waves go dormant. Remember that Oahu is the best known island for surfing and is likely to be crowded regardless of when or where you surf.

Kauai

If you are visiting Kauai during the winter, check out Hanalei Bay on the North Shore if you are an experienced surfer. Kealia is another winter spot for the experienced.   Poipu and Kalapaki, on the South and South East side of the island respectively, are good places for beginners to practice their skills. Watch for not only other surfers, but for sharks.

Maui

Peahi, or Jaws, is for professional surfers and lunatics only.  Honolua and Kanaha, both on the North Shore, are good locations for experienced surfers.  Waiehu, on the South West shore by Lahaina, is a good all-around surfing area.  There is also good, general surfing in the Lahaina Harbor.  Sharks swim in waters off Maui, too, so keep an eye out for them.

Hawaii

The Big Island is considered by many to be the worst place in the Islands for surfing.  However, this does not mean that there are not places to ride the waves.  If you are looking to watch world class surfing, go to Coast Guard, near Hawi.  If you are experienced, but not a necessarily a professional surfer, try Pine Trees by the airport for Northwestern, Western, and Southwestern swells.  Honolii, near Hilo, is a good place for surfers of all levels.  Be prepared for rocks, coral, sea urchins, and an occasional shark when surfing the Big Island.

The Hawaiian Islands are justifiably famous world-wide for surfing.  Before planning your trip, look up additional information on these surfing spots, as well as others, on the internet.  Before heading out to the beach make sure that you check conditions.  Do not try to surf waves that are well beyond your capabilities. Watch out for other surfers and be safe.
