The stereotype of the southern man is that he enjoys nothing more than a leisurely afternoon at the water¡¯s edge with a beer can in his hand, fishing until the last of sunset¡¯s muted bouquet has faded into the horizon. If the booming sport-fishing industry of Lake Michigan, however, is any indication, this fantasy extends beyond just those men south of the Mason-Dixie Line. The northern male apparently dreams of the very same type of afternoon and is just as efficient at orchestrating it.

Planning a fishing trip, specifically one focused on sport fishing and salmon fishing, is surprisingly straightforward. There are no passports to be obtained through verbose government applications, nor is there any real need to schedule months in advance for the best rates. Instead, you need only look as far forward as next weekend.

Lake Michigan is an ideal location for sport fishing, because it offers 1,660 miles of varied shoreline. There are more than one hundred towns and cities that have developed on the bank of Lake Michigan, and due to such abundance of the resource, prices for lodges and other fishing-related facilities are competitive. You should first perhaps narrow down the region you would like to be in, as Lake Michigan and its ¡°affiliate¡± tributaries, streams, and rivers span four states. To keep in the general spirit of a fishing trip, perhaps you should consider first the location nearest to you (which would, presumably, require the least forethought). 

Winnetka, Illinois is a popular location for sport fishing, and it can be found just north of the booming metropolis of Chicago. Perhaps you can leave those who are less-inclined to spend a day relaxing by the water in the city, and then drive to one of the three parks that provide access to the lake (Tower Road Beach, Lloyd Park, and Maple Street Park). Make sure to carry your fishing license and all proper registration (not to mention your bait and tackle¡­).  In this area, the best time to fish for salmon lies within September and October. The Chinook salmon can be caught slightly earlier than the Coho Salmon (with a difference of about one month). For the remainder of the year through April, you will have to content yourself with Brown Trout or Steelhead, amongst other fish.

Another promising location for salmon fishing or sport fishing in general is a little farther north, across the state border in Michigan- Elk Rapids. Elk Rapids features a unique, 35-foot long filled-earth structure with a barrier-free cement walkway down its center. The out flowing Elk River can be accessed by a hard-surface parking lot with a capacity of 45 vehicles (plenty of room for you and your friends). There are three fishing platforms (each an ample 37 feet by 15 feet) and public toilets. As in Winnetka, Chinook and Coho salmon can be caught here in the fall, but slightly earlier- from mid-August through September.

However, some things to do with planning your fishing trip will be the same regardless of where you choose to go. You should invest a little bit of planning beforehand in order to ensure that you aren¡¯t (as the saying goes) ¡°up a creek without a paddle¡± once you arrive. For example, make sure to book accommodation in advance. You could even consider an all-inclusive deal, which some fishing lodges offer. They will provide little necessities from transportation to food to location-specific advice to visiting fishermen. Also, when packing, prepare yourself for most (if not all) likely eventuality. Pack food that won¡¯t spoil over a short period of time, warm clothes, and all necessary identification. Lastly, don¡¯t forget the appropriate, mood-setting music. Anything country will do, because after all, fishing is the fetish of the southern man.
