Texas is a vast state with highly diverse cultures and there are activities in the Lone Star State to satisfy any visitor's interests no matter which part of the state you will be experiencing. Texas is second in size only to Alaska.
To begin with a few of the major outdoor activity attractions, try Guadalupe Mountains National Park, South Padre Island, Big Bend National Park, and Canyon Lake.
For a visit to the culture-filled city of San Antonio, you may want to start your vacation visiting the Alamo. You will see where the legendary Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie fought valiantly. This is actually a mission that was called Mission San Antonio de Valero and was founded by the Spanish in the latter part of the 18th century. Although there are five different gates into the Alamo complex, you might want to enter at the site of the old church.
Another great stop in this city is Sea World San Antonio. The park has more than two dozen shows, rides, and animal attractions. It covers two hundred and fifty acres and includes a water park and animal park.
Still more fun things to do in San Antonio include the San Antonio Zoo, Six Flags Fiesta Texas Theme Park, and many museums, parks, restaurants, and shopping opportunities.
If your visit to Texas will include the capital city of Austin, there will be plenty to keep your agenda busy both day and night. For exercise or a spectacular view of Austin, try Mount Bonnell. The mountain rises nearly 800 feet high above the city. This is a beautiful park with a romantic legend intact. Ask a local for the story before you begin the walk to the top. You may want to take a picnic lunch or dinner with you.
Also near Austin is the McKinney Falls State Park. The park covers more than seven hundred acres and offers fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities. This is a good place for watching wildlife.
Pioneer Farm is a living history museum showing what rural life was like in Texas in the late 19th century. Costumed guides will help depict for guests what Texas was like in "the olden days." Austin has many other historical sites, art galleries, a zoo, and museums as well. If your visit will include this type of stop, you may want to start at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum or the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.
Still another fun city in Texas to visit is Dallas. Stop by the Dallas World Aquarium to see the marine life housed in this top notch aquarium. The main aquarium has over eighty five thousand gallons of saltwater and the fish and animals represent regions from around the world. See the Predators Exhibit, the Rainforest, and South Africa areas and exhibits, as well. Restaurants and a gift shop can be found at the aquarium.
The Dallas Zoo is the oldest zoo in Texas and has 95 developed acres. The main area is divided into two parts, Zoo North and the Wilds of Africa. There is also a Children's Zoo here. There is a gift shop, a Cafe, and a restaurant (Prime Meridian Restaurant) on site at the zoo.
If you have an interest in art, be sure to plan for a visit to the Arts District of Dallas, and one of many fine museums is called The Sixth Floor Museum. This building is where Lee Harvey Oswald fired the shots at President Kennedy. The museum's exhibits tell the legacy of John F. Kennedy.
If your visit to Texas takes you to the Houston area, be sure to stop by the NASA Space Center for a visit. Try out the simulations that will allow you to feel what it is like to take a walk in space, or take some steps on the moon.
As many of the larger cities in Texas offer, Houston has a zoo, museums, night life, and many indoor and outdoor activities for visitors. For shopping, look for the Galleria, and check out the theater district in the downtown area.
If you are in the Corpus Christi vicinity and want to escape the noise and fast pace of city life for a while, visit the 130,000+ acre Padre Island National Seashore. This barrier island will provide a day of relaxation whether you are fishing, wind surfing, or just lying on the beach.
If you want to do other things in Corpus Christi besides the beach and water sports, the city offers the Museum of Science, the USS Lexington WWII aircraft carrier, and the Texas State Aquarium.
Last but certainly not least is the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area north of Fredericksburg. This is a perfect area for rock climbing, hiking, studying geology, and camping. Because of the location, it is also a good choice for a place to watch the stars due to low lights from a city in this area. The elevation here is 1825 feet. This is one of the largest underground rock formations in the country that has been uncovered by erosion. Such a formation is called a batholith. |
