You've waited and planned, packed and traveled, and your much-anticipated vacation at Disney World has finally arrived! Now, you want to do everything possible to make the most of your big day at the Happiest Place on Earth. Whether you are visiting Walt's original park, the Magic Kingdom, or one of the three more recent additions to the Big Cheese's kingdom, a little time planning how to map out your day will help you to see as much of the not-so-small world as possible.

Before visiting Disney World, find out the parks' hours before you arrive. You will find that the parks do not all have the same hours of operation, and the hours vary depending on the time of year, and even the day. For instance, Animal Kingdom closes earlier than the other parks due to the needs of the live animals calling this park their home. And, since the time of sunset varies, so does the closing time. Also, if you are staying at one of Disney World's Resorts, you will be able to enjoy longer hours in some of the parks. Knowing when each park opens and closes will make planning your day much easier. Also, keep in mind that if you have a park-hopper pass, you can visit the parks with earlier closing times first, then hop over to the later parks in the afternoon or evening, in order to make the most of your day. 

As soon as you arrive at Disney World,  be sure to pick up a map of the parks you are planning to see. If you are unfamiliar with the attractions, as one of the cast members which ones are the most popular and usually have the longest wait.  You can anticipate that Space Mountain, The Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain, and Thunder Mountain Railroad will have some of the longest wait times at the Magic Kingdom. At EPCOT, you will find one of the longest lines at Test Track, for example.  To avoid spending all day standing in line, you will have several options. First, you might want to head to these attractions as soon as you arrive, before there are too many people in line already. Obviously, this plan will only work for one or two of the rides, since the crowds will have grown while you were enjoying the ride. So, your next choice is the Fast Pass. Many of the more popular attractions at Disney World offer this free opportunity to enjoy the event without having to stand in line. To take advantage of the Fast Pass, go to the attraction, such as Space Mountain, where you will find a ticket machine for that ride. A sign will tell you what the return time is that is currently being assigned. You will insert your park entrance ticket, and be given a Fast Pass that tells you what time to return. When you come back, there will be a separate entrance where you will be able to enjoy the ride without having to stand in line. Sound too good to be true? The only limiting factor is that you can only have one active Fast Pass at a time. So, if you are to return to Space Mountain between 11:00 and 12:00, you cannot  get a Fast Pass for another ride until this time has passed. 

Another way to avoid spending all day standing in line is to visit the more popular attractions during meal times, a parade, the fireworks, or other special event that will be drawing the crowds away from a particular ride. The down side of this is that you may miss a particular parade, if it is only running once that day. Or, you may find yourself watching the fireworks while standing in line. If this does not matter to you, then you may be able to save yourself a few minutes of waiting time. 

To make sure that you get to see everything you want to during your day at Walt Disney World, check the map for show times. Many of the attractions run continuously, however you will find certain live shows, parades, and other events that are only offered at certain times, or that close earlier than the rest of the park. To avoid some of the crowds or to get a better seat, consider the audience at these shows. For example, a parade or show geared toward young children will probably be less crowded later at night, after many of the younger guests' bed times. Also, it is probably worth asking an employee how long ahead of time you should plan to arrive at these events. Parade routes may begin to fill up an hour or two before the parade, and the beginning of the parade route will fill up first. The Fantasmic show at MGM Studios will fill up much earlier than show begins also. One way to be guaranteed a better seat with less wait time for some of these shows is to make dinner reservations in one of the restaurants that includes preferred seating for the shows. Check at Guest Relations, on your map, or with one of the cast members for information regarding this option.

Another consideration regarding meals is not only where, but  when to eat. Obviously, restaurants will be most crowded at traditional meal times. Planning to eat a little earlier, or a little later than the other guests will offer shorter lines for food, more available seating, and less "down time" during an action-packed day at Disney World. Or, consider making the most of this time by eating while you wait for a parade or show to start. Food and drinks will not be permitted at the indoor attractions, but you can certainly enjoy a meal or snack along the parade route, in an outdoor auditorium, or in line outside of a building. If you have your heart set on a particular restaurant, be sure to check the map for which restaurants close before the park. For instance, if you absolutely have to eat at the Pizza Planet at MGM, plan to do so earlier in the day since it will not be open as long as the rest of the park. Also, if you want to enjoy a meal in one of the sit-down type restaurants, character meals, or a restaurant offering a show, make reservations early in the day.

And, of course, plan time to do a little shopping. Recognize that the middle of the day in Florida can be very hot, and shopping indoors offers a nice, air-conditioned reprieve during the worst of the heat. Also, since rain will be in the forecast during many summer afternoons, shopping also offers a nice way to stay dry. You may also find that many of the shops are open later than the park's official closing time, so shopping at the end of the day can extend your time in the park as well. 

Spending a little time with your Disney World map can help you make the most of your day. Knowing the hours of each attraction, avoiding wasted time spent in lines, and making sure you get to see everything you want to will make your time spent at the happiest place on earth even happier!
